Import Duties --ordering from the US

Hi all,
One of our friends gave us an Amazon.com gift certificate, thinking it would be easier re: shipping. But I read that we could be subject to import duties/taxes. Has anyone had any experience w/ this? What would the duties be on (CDs, DVDs?) and around how much?

It's my understanding that books are okay because in the UK they aren't taxed. (Well, books with CDs are, but it's a marked reduction...2% vs. 17.5%)

I think as long as the items are clearly marked as books, you've no problem.

Hmm. thanks for the info. What a pain--I want CDs! I am already buried in books.

By the way, LisaE, I'm from Venice FL. Have been meaning to say so since I saw you were from Naples.

I bought contacts from 1-800 contacts from the US thinking i would get a better deal..i had to pay the tax..because they were over 100 pounds..eek it sucked
