Working without a permit once I am married
« on: January 20, 2006, 02:03:55 PM »
I have been working in the UK since May 2003.  My USA company transferred me to the UK office and in May of 2004 they permanently transferred my employment to this office.

I HATE MY JOB NOW! I wont bore you with the details...

I am getting married to a Brit this year in May.   Once I am married, am I eligible to work anywhere in the UK without a work permit? What do I need to do to do this?

Thanks!

You can apply for Further Leave to Remain (FLR) as a spouse of a British citizen. This lasts two years and at the end of that you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). These visas allow you to live and work in the UK without restriction as to employer etc.

What do I need to get that?

Getting married abroad so I imagine I will have to wait for my certificate of marriage to arrive back in the UK.

How long does it take from applying for FLR and getting it?

And how much does it cost?

Thanks!!

You can get it on the same day if you apply in person, not sure of the postal tunraround, someone else can probaly advise on that.  Fees -  £335 by post, £500 in person (or thereabouts).  For the FLR you will need to show your marriage certificate and some relationship evidence. This is the form you need which has all the details of exactly what to provide:

If you are getting married abroad, you can apply in the British Consultate for leave to Enter as the spouse of a UK national, providing you have residency in the country you are applying from.  Details are on www.ukvisas.gov.uk
