How funny is your American?
« on: January 22, 2006, 09:57:31 AM »
Not poking fun but how funny is your American spouse/partner/fiance?  When my husband first moved over here he was reading the paper one day and asked me what a bud-gary-gar was? Turned out the word was budgerigar! Anyone else care to share funny stories like that?

OK, I'll bite. As am american, when I first came over here, I asked my hubby why all the stores were called the Evening Mail........ ::)....Well!!! The way they put up the signs, it's like a store sign in America!!  Needless to say, he laughed at me, then explained.

American here.

When I first came here, I didn't realise that street names were attached to the sides of houses. I thought the arrow signs in the city centre pointing toward attractions for tourists were street signs. So when I saw a sign pointing towards a particular street, which could have been on the other side of town, I thought I was actually on that street, and I kept complaining about how the maps were all f*cked up.

P.S. Budgerigar is an American word, too. We call them budgies for short.

I always thought so as well, MeShell.

When I first moved here Richard did his best to convince me that a ten pence piece was called a "pickle".  I almost believed him. The only thing that gave it away was a cashier who couldn't quite control her smirk at a shop one day when Richard told me to ask for a bunch of pickles for change.

I know I'm late - where's the booze?

When a friend came to visit we were explaining her that "tar" meant thank you---she wanted to know what she should say as a reply. My husband told her "balloon" was for your welcome. She almost believed it!

It is "ta." Maybe the person who told HG it's "tar" were just having a go at her for being American!! LOL!

Actually ta is more common--- but here in the northwest tar is used more frequently..appearantly it originally was used in letters to mean thanks and regards. Any shop here you walk in you will get a "tar" as you hand the money.

Really? With an 'R' on the end?! I've never heard that! What a sheltered life we live down south!
