Ah- who cares- this stuff is priceless. I have my own funny story. When I visited my sweetie for the 1st time we were in a pub and I saw a sign that read: Disabled Toilet. For the life of me I could not figure out why they were advertising that the toilet was broken. My honey still laughs at me for this and loves to tell all his friends.

To stop you using it?   ;)

Haha- right. BUT it was not a sign actually- it was engraved into the wall. So I was thinking- why engrave that into the wall instead of actually fixing said toilet. I realised later what they were referring to.

i guess maybe this thread should be renamed "funny things Americans do once they've crossed the pond"....

i'd like to add something that i did yesterday....i had to go to london for an interview.  well...it was more like the outskirts of london.  i made sure i was well prepared before leaving.  i printed tube maps, train maps, maps of the area i was going, etc.

i get to the area of my final destination, but i wasn't quite sure what street i was on.  i walk a little bit and i see a sign that says "Maiden"...walk a little bit more and see another sign that says the same thing.  so, i'm thinking i must be on maiden street...but i don't see it anywhere on my map.  i walk along "Maiden" street and i find the building i was looking for with no worries.

it wasn't until i was headed home and was in the train station when i saw another sign that said "Maiden".  then it finally clicked....every time i had seen the word "Maiden" it had been underneath a billboard advert. that's the company that does the billboard signs!! so i never was on maiden street...no wonder why i couldn't find it on my stupid map!!

OK, I'll bite. As am american, when I first came over here, I asked my hubby why all the stores were called the Evening Mail........ ::)....Well!!! The way they put up the signs, it's like a store sign in America!!  Needless to say, he laughed at me, then explained.

What is "Evening Mail"?

It's probably a local newspaper.

Liz,

I had to laugh at how you titled this link, as if Americans are housepets. "How cute is your English bulldog?"  ;D

Suzanne

We call them simply "budgies" in the States, so I can understand his confusion.

When first coming over, I found the "elderly crossing" signs rather comical....every time I saw one, I'd burst out laughing...
And how about those Robin Reliants?? [smiley=laugh4.gif] [smiley=laugh4.gif]
