Air India
« on: May 24, 2002, 09:39:00 PM »
My moving issue? The cost of bloody flight in July from the US to the UK. Holy CRAP.

Anyway, it seems to be cheaper if I fly Air India.

Any experiences with it? Should I be wary? Should we spent the extra pounds to put me on a US or BA flight?

Well ... India is ready to go to war with Pakistan over the Kashmir issue.  I don't think I would fly Air India at the moment.  But I could just be paranoid.  I'm a bit paranoid about flying anyway.  If you're going to spend the extra money, try Virgin Atlantic.  Costs a little more (but no more than BA), and you get lots of stuff.

Have you tried a consolidator yet? Find them in your local yellow pages. They buy tickets in bulk and pass along the savings.

Worst airline I ever fly by the way was.......Air Uzbakistan. The had actual goats and chickens running up and down the asiles. You catch 'em they stun 'em and dinner is served. Wild wacky stuff.

Are  you still 25 or younger?  You might want to try Council Travel or STA travel.  They specialise in travel for young people.  You'll have to buy a card if you want to get a ticket from them, but it only cost about 18 dollars and the savings can usually be substantial.  They both have web sites, but I would highly suggest you call them direct as I often find a really cheap flight, but online it says no availablity.  I then phone them up and they suddenly have avaibility.  Its definately worth checking out

Scrumpy beat me to it - but especially after the surface-to-surface missile "tests" that Pakistan did this morning, I definitely would not go Air India.

Virgin Atlantic, all the way!!  And you do get lots of stuff!  My kids loved it.  Plus, you can sip a can of London Pride on your way over...yum!! :D

forgot all about STA travel - damn I wish someone had reminded me of it when I was conducting my absurdly drawn out long distance wooing with the wife years ago.

Thank god for frequent flyer mileage programs.  The other half had 1,000,000+ plus miles he had racked up from business travel before he met me  ::) and now.....

One other option to check out Marlespo are courier rates.  My partner used to come over the US as a courier, ended up carrying nothing and saved about $200......However there is a weight restriction (or piece restriction) on your luggage.  You can bring suitcases, but if you are planning on moving alot of stuff over it may be a restriction

If you are coming from the US the best bet is to call a US carrier as the airlines get them from their country of origin

.....for others flying from here back to the US you can try the UK carriers.  The courier reservation number for BA is 0870 606 1133.

UK via NJ, VT, CT, RI and MA

just a thought

when i was gonna mail stuff to the uk before flying over...i found it was cheaper to send 1 large heavy box rather then several lighter smaller boxes...dont know if that applies to air fraight...but worth checking out the rates...maybe you can fit more in large boxes....and have fewer to ship...

hope that helps...

check the rates...

also.....it might be better to have them shipped in advance or after you arrive...dont have them come with you...i recall someone telling me about customs nightmares if you arrive with your stuff at the same time...

Marlespo, not trying to offend anybody but when you have to fly a long way I really cannot recommend Air India as they do have different, lets say,  opinions on air safety and....hygiene :-[ :-[.

If you don't really have an exact date that you need to come over, checking out lastminute.com could be useful too! 8)

lastminute.com seems only to be for flights leaving the UK.

You could try priceline.com, if you're willing to live with what you get.  You can request no more than one connection, so you wouldn't be flying all over the place for two days!

We finally got the ticket from expedia, which is where we've gotten nearly all of our tickets, they've got graeet service. We tired everything else under the sun but for a billion reasons (mostly that I was staying too long) none of the discount sites had available tickets.

And I'm not doing Air India... it's BA for me bay-bee.
