Volunteering while on fiance visa
« on: December 14, 2007, 01:51:43 PM »
My understanding is that one is *not allowed* to volunteer while here on a fiance visa.  I'm sure I've seen that clearly laid out before.

Can someone please point me in the direction of the thread where this was stated clearly?

And if it was stated by garry or Victoria that would be even better.  I need to tell someone who is insisting that I can volunteer that she is wrong.  It would be great if I could say "an immigration advisor has told me....".

Thanks guys.

A few more:

They mention it - but I agree that the one meggles posted is a good one (I was just about to include it here when I saw meggles already had!).

Thanks guys.  I did do some searching and found the "shades of grey link".  The link where I can quote garry is the best one.

I guess I can say "The fiance visa does not permit paid or unpaid work and volunteering is considered unpaid work".  I can say garry, an immigration advisor said so (if he doesn't mind, that is.)

The 'shades of grey' thread is pretty comprehensive.  Who would you be volunteering with?

A charity shop organization like Oxfam.  (I won't actually say the company's name.) I've actually been hired for a paid position within the organization and someone suggested while waiting for my FLR(M) to be approved (that's when I start the job) that I could work as a volunteer in the shop to start off with.  But that doesn't seem at all "kosher" to me and I'm definitely not going to do it.

You are absolutely right, you can't do it.  If the job offer wasn't there, then maybe, but this is just too close to call, so you are right to err on the side of caution.
