Wow Angel....and others as well.  Your NHS dental experiences have not mirrored my own.  In fact, my experiences have been the opposite.  We have check ups with our dentist every 6 months like clock work.  They automatically make the appointment for the next check up when you go in.  I really like our dentist.  She's an African lady.  She's always been nice to us, and she's always taken very good care of our teeth.  I just had a root canal job done recently.  I only paid about £60 total for all the work she did: x-rays, cleaning out the tooth and filling it.  Had to go in several times over a period of weeks to do the job.   I was quite happy it was so cheap.  I figured it would run in the hundreds. Nope.

Sounds like it's a case of where you are and who you get.  Overall I've been very happy with my UK dental experiences.

well unlike with GPs I don't think you are restricted to seeing a dentist in the area where you live so Elle maybe we should all try yours in Essex!

Ok so what about pulling 4 wisdom teeth privately? There are no NHS doctors here in my area and the hospital's emergency dental unit wont see me because I havent passed out from pain yet. 4 years ago my dentist in the US told me my wisdom teeth were impacted and needed to be pulled, then I moved to the UK and havent been able to get an NHS dentist in 3 damn years. Im practically desperate to have them removed but I cant stand the thought of having to pay for it privately. I dont have that kind of money. Am I just thinking is more expensive than it really is?

That's true.
My SIL & nieces in Shetland all use my NHS dentist in Glasgow.

Broxi, thats very interesting. I didnt know that.

Jemima, thanks for that info. I havent contacted any dentists to get the bad news yet lol. Ive been trying to hold off until Im back in the states where there's an orthodontist on every corner (at least in Houston). Mom knows a really good one there and since I need extensive work done it just seems easier to have a general anaesthetic once and have the whole lot taken care of rather than have to go under numerous times. Thanks for your help though - its something to think about for sure.
