Hello from a transplanted New Yorker
« on: January 08, 2003, 04:33:49 PM »
My name's Greg Pendergrass and I'm a recent transplant from New York City to Hornchurch in way east london. My wife's from London and we decided to move back here, which is a familiar story on this forum I'm sure!

In the past week and a half I've been introduced to Sainesbury's, Marks and Spencer, and "The League of Gentlemen" which I find insanely funny (a sign of a sick mind). I'm looking forward to seeing more and meeting lots of people.

A question for the more experienced ex-pats: I am an IT specialist without a job. Are there any sites or recruiters out there specializing in ex-pat recruitment?

Also, if there are any Jets fans out there drop me a line!

Cheers!

Greg Pendergrass

Hi Greg,

 Welcome to UKY...

I am not in England yet... so have not been introduced to the popular markets yet...  I know there is a safeway in Alnwick near where I will be living and that makes me happy...

 Baltmore Ravens fan here...

Welcome Greg. :)

Can't help with the expat recruiting question, but NYState_of_Mind (Yvonne) is a big football fan, and from NYC. She must be a Jets fan. :)

Hey Greg,

Nice to have a fellow New Yorker on-line with us.  There's not many of us here....  You know New Yorkers are a different kind of breed within the U.S. Border   [smiley=smoking.gif] 8)

My fiancee and I live in East London (is that where you said you laid your hat down)?  About 5 minutes from Carnary Wharf to the left and to the right Greenwich.  We're right on the Thames.  I hated it here the first six months or so.  Was miserble.  The only good thing was of course being with my honey whom I'll love pass the end of time.  I've come to not love it (never will) but have come to appreciate where I am living and loving the experience.  Enjoying the new friends I've made and the travelling we're doing.  If that makes any sense (Yvonne talk, only a couple of people have mastered the language of Yvonne  [smiley=laugh4.gif])  Just as long as I go home every couple of months I do OK....  I need to re-claim my New Yawk accent I'm so very proud of  :) that I feel goes weaker the longer I stay here..  Plus it gives Belgium Beer a break and time for my to do some REAL SHOPPING!!!  But for now we're here and enjoying it.

Actually Leah is so RIGHT...  I'm a HUGE FOOTBALL FAN!!  For those friendly Brits we love so much I'm not taking your football here.  We're talking the pure, unadulturated, NFL of FOX, with Terry, Howie, et al, trash talking, sack the QB's a*s, slam-him-down, get up in his face, good ol' American Football...  None of the B.S. no trash talking or else you get a red card stuff...... F-O-O-T-B-A-L-L .... FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL.  Greg, you're a JET Fan so I'm sure you'll appreciate what I just wrote  ;)  8)

It's PLAYOFF TIME BABY...

But sorry to break your bubble - I AM NO JET FAN...!!!!  My team sucks but I still love them.  Besides they're the ONLY REAL NEW YORK TEAM - THAT PLAYS IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK....  And not the nuclear waste of New Jersey..  Second team are the Giants....But we all know what happened to them last week..  But my dad is a Jet fan :P  Don't know why I threw that in, thought I just would...  Considering I was raised on football you'd think I'd be a J-E-T-S.... JETS, JETS, JETS FAN... But I'm not...  But I will DEFINITELY watch them and may even cheer them on since they're the only ermmm, mmm, (as Yvonne clears her throat) NY team that's still alive in the PLAYOFFS!!!

IT'S PLAYOFF TIME ON FOX!!!  FOX on NFL... God, how I miss that  [smiley=disappointed.gif]

re: the IT info, best check out www.jobserve.co.uk or www.totaljobs.co.uk for IT. most agencies list on one or both of those sites.

good luck with your search!

hey there Greg! As you may have guessed from the name I too am a native New Yorker, by which I mean Manhattan. Been here almost 5 years now.

As Nystate_of_mind says we are a breed apart - for better or worse.

Can't help with the JETS. I follow no sports other than some football/soccer as my son is an avid player. Enjoy the site and keep posting!

See you around.  :)

Hi Greg!  Welcome to the board.  I'm from upstate NY but spent most of the 90s living in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.  Can't help with the IT field and have no interest in football but wanted to say hello and good luck!

Hello from another transplanted New Yorker!

Like NYinBrighton, I'm from Upstate I've been in South-east London for a year and a half & work in Central London. I came to be with my boyfriend (now fiance! yay!) so like you, I had a good reason to move so far away from home! I've nearly managed to have it feel like home. Not having lived in a city before, it's been eyeopening and a bit overwhelming at times...but the experience has been well worth it! I love London and will absolutely miss it and the friends I've made when we move away!

I had a few suggestions for job searches- Monster.co.uk is always a good way to start, but hitting the employment agencies is also very good. That way they can cater to *exactly* what you want! Needless to say, I've seen tons of IT jobs while searching online in just a general google search- yours is the field to be in!

As for the Jets- they bring back great memories of watching football with my Dad who was raised on Long Island. Good Stuff.

Best of luck settling in! Welcome to the ex-pat club!  ;D
