It is far more common in the UK to have a DJ (tux).  Everyone of my male friends has one.  It is as normal, IME, as a suit.

I have enough of a range of dresses now, that I rarely buy a new one.  Most women I know are like that as well.

I think my husband has an old dingy one somewhere ;D  But, my dad (In the US) has always had a tux (Now two) but my parents tend to go to a bzillion black tie events yearly :D

As for holiday parties, I was not invited to Rich's for the first few years, which was fine with me.  They usually had fancy dress, and I don't really like to do that.  The last few years we have been invited and I've gone.  It helps that I know a lot of the people he works with and am friends with most of them.  This year it's fancy dress again and I said I'd pass :)

I think I'd go on my own though if I had one at work. (If I worked outside my home)  I know I'd have more fun ;D

My company allows all employees to invite a guest.  I would say that 65% of people bring one.  I wouldn't be surprised though if next year it's cut to employees only.  I work in the financial sector and the company luckily has grown big enough (350 employees in London) that having a party for 500+ people is getting prohibitively expensive and with the current market may be seen in poor taste.  Since I am on the planning committee each year, I listen to everyone's complaints.  Some people will be happy with an employee only policy (these are the ones who like to drink too much and get jiggy on the dance floor) and others will be upset.  We'll never make everyone happy so I have learned to live with the complaints.

I invite my husband each year and each year he says no.  He has no interest in small talk with my colleagues.  On the other hand, he always wants me to go to his and I do.  I usually end up separated from him within an hour and talking to some random people from IT or Sales.  It's fun, but then I don't mind small talk.

I work in local goverment, so Christmas is done cheaply. :P Each department gets $15 per person and they can do what they want, but it's employees only...no spouses. Our department is just taking a long lunch together one day and going to a nice restaurant and each paying the difference. Let's face it...$15 doesn't buy much. :P

My ex-husband's company always included spouses and they had really nice Christmas parties and I liked going because everybody was so much fun to be around and after years of him working there, I pretty much knew everybody anyway. Now, if his family get togethers had been no spouses allowed, I'd have been thrilled. ;D

In my whole working life I have never worked for a company where they allow a guest if they are paying for a function...

If its been a privately arranged thing...then its been ok

My office is huge, so we have individual lunches - usually one for the directorate and then one for the team that we pay for ourselves. We don't bring partners and to be honest I think it would be weird if we did. My dh's company has a huge do at night and spouses aren't invited - I'd HATE going so I'm glad - it's bad enough going out on a normal night out with his colleagues and hearing them go on and on about work stuff and people I don't know. Yuck!!!

I'm so jealous!! Fancy dress parties are my absolute favourite kind of party!! Why don't I ever get invited to one?!?!!  >:(

From now on you can have all of my fancy dress party invitations - I'm with Stacey. Totally not my thing!!

Subject: Christmas party announcement

MEMO

FROM: Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
TO: Everyone
RE: Christmas Party

I’m happy to inform you that the company Christmas
Party will take place on December 23, starting at noon
in the banquet room at Luigi’s Open Pit Barbecue.

No-host bar, but plenty of eggnog! We’ll have a small
band playing traditional carols…feel free to sing
along. And don’t be surprised if our CEO shows up
dressed as Santa Claus!

====================================================

FROM; Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
RE: Christmas Party

In no way was yesterday’s memo intended to exclude our
Jewish employees. We recognize that Chanukah is an
important holiday which often coincides with
Christmas, though unfortunately not this year.

However, from now on we’re calling it our “Holiday
Party”. The same policy applies to employees who are
celebrating Kwanzaa at this time.

Happy now?

======================================================

FROM; Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
RE: Holiday Party

Regarding the note I received from a member of
Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking
table…you didn’t sign your name. I’m happy to
accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a
table that reads, “AA Only”; you wouldn’t be anonymous
anymore.

How am I supposed to handle this?

Somebody?

=====================================================

FROM; Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
RE: Holiday Party

What a diverse company we are! I had no idea that
December 20 begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan,
which forbids eating, drinking and sex during daylight
hours. There goes the party!

Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon this time
of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees’
beliefs. Perhaps Luigi’s can hold off on serving your
meal until the end of the party — the days are so
short this time of year — or else package everything
for take-home in little foil swans.

Will that work?

Meanwhile, I’ve arranged for members of Overeaters
Anonymous to sit farthest from the dessert buffet and
pregnant women will get the table closest to the
restrooms.

Did I miss anything?

=====================================================

FROM; Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
RE: Holiday Party

So December 22 marks the Winter Solstice…what do you
expect me to do, a tap-dance on your heads? Fire
regulations at Luigi’s prohibit the burning of sage by
our “earth-based Goddess-worshipping” employees, but
we’ll try to accommodate your shamanic drumming circle
during the band’s breaks.

Okay???

======================================================

FROM; Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
Date: December 9
RE: Holiday Party

People, people, nothing sinister was intended by
having our CEO dress up like Santa Claus! Even if the
anagram of “Santa” does happen to be “Satan,” there is
no evil connotation to our own “little man in a red
suit.” It’s a tradition, folks, like sugar shock at
Halloween or family feuds over the Thanksgiving turkey
or broken hearts on Valentine’s Day.

Could we lighten up?

======================================================

FROM; Pat Lewis, Human Resources Director
RE: Holiday Party

Vegetarians!?!?!?

I’ve had it with you people!!!

We’re going to keep this party at Luigi’s Open Pit
Barbecue whether you like it or not, so you can sit
quietly at the table furthest from the “grill of
death”, as you so quaintly put it, and you’ll get your
#$%^&*! salad bar, including hydroponic tomatoes…but
you know, they have feelings, too. Tomatoes scream
when you slice them. I’ve heard them scream, I’m
hearing them scream right now!

=======================================================

FROM: Teri Bishops, Acting Human Resources Director
RE: Pat Lewis and Holiday Party

I’m sure I speak for all of us in wishing Pat Lewis a
speedy recovery from her stress-related illness and
I’ll continue to forward your cards to her at the
sanatorium.

In the meantime, management has decided to cancel our
Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the
23rd off with full pay.

Happy Chanu-Kwanzaa-Solsti-Rama-Mas!!

I didn't mind not being invited to one party but when every department had to have their own party/drinks/dinner I don't think I saw my other half for most of December!
