From Phoenix to Wiltshire

Hello,

This forum and website is certainly a site for my homesick eyes. I have been in England 6 months and been missing the US terribly. My name is Melissa and I met my fiance over the internet. We started off as friends as when we met in person found we can't be apart. I have adjusted to the culture shock and the "Brit speak" and once I found the expat store in Lacock I have happily settled in. Only thing its hard to adjust to is the weather. Being from sunny Phoenix(avaerage 335 days a yr) I find myself cold alot of the times. I hope to be able to get to know ppl here (fellow expats) so I don't feel so lonely and so I can talk to ppl who know what a s'more is.

hi melissa,
i have been in london since july and i know how you feel about the weather. I'm from ohio where it gets much colder than here, but i often feel colder here. i think it has something to do with the humidity. i haven't found an expat store yet, but i did find a canadian one (good for things like maple syrup and pancake mix). and i know what a s'more is too!

Hi Webgoddess!

I'm in good ol' Chippenham here and my stepson resides in Derry Hill which is rather close to you.  I don't know Calne too well but have dropped in a few times to look for hard to find items.  Is this where you do your shopping or do you head for the gleaming metropolis of Chippenham?

Are you working yet?  I can understand about the homesick thing.  It is such a tough issue.  My kids go to playgroup in Lacock and sometimes I feel so left out of the village chat.  (And some of it sounds quite juicy too!) Sometimes I think it is harder to be in a bigger town because people tend to keep to themselves. I think in the 3 years i've lived on this block, i've met 3 neighbours.  Even the ones with young kids aren't friendly which I find a bit....odd.

I'm Stephanie by the by. It sounds as if Wiltshire is getting a nice little Women Yankee group.  We'll definitely have to have a get together and i'm sure LisaE will be supporting that idea.  We should go for a Yankee Women dinner out.  That would scared the locals at the pub!!!!!!! Or the local Chinese. They wouldn't know what hit them.

Yes, i've been thru Phoenix en route to the South.  You must be missing the weather dreadfully. Especially now when it's so pleasant in Arizona and so not pleasant here.

Welcome!

Melissa, how on earth did you manage to find made in America in Lacock? I have lived in Melksham for three years, and everytime they move (Chippenham->Melksham->Lacock) it takes me ages to track them down again! Up that funny old track, you think you're going to fall off the edge.

Definitely we need a Wiltshire get-together! And I know we keep talking about it, so it's time....time to set a time. I am looking at a couple of possibilities.
1) Family time Who's got young kids not too old to think this idea is naff and wouldn't do it anyway? That would make it probably an afternoonish get-together, possibly a Sunday.
2) Couple time Men get lonely cooped up by themselves. This would be a casual meet-at-a-restaurant, or meet at someone's house some evening, probably either Friday or Saturday night.
3) Girls Night Out Look out Wiltshire! (Or, could just be dacquiries in our hot tub.) Any night of the week the boys want to do some babysitting to let us have some giggles.
4) Yoga Class I'll bet we can pool our tapes/videos/DVDs and do a little stretching between our gossiping. Who needs an instructor when you can laugh at Geri Halliwell?

Okay, what vote you?

Wow,

U sure know how to make a girl feel welcome. LisaE I take none of the credit for finding the Made In America store. I was moaning about not having my food staples and a kindly Brit gave me the link to put me outta my misery. I vote for anything that gives me an excuse to meet the "Women Yankee Group" as Hopster(Stephanie) called it. LOL..look out locals..here we come!  :D ;D :o 8) :P

Hey, we could start our own branch of the Daughters of the American Revolution club! (Never heard of it until another gal yank told me the other day! Suppose that is the American version of the Women's Institute?)

Well put my vote at Girl's Night out. Only because, as LisaE already knows, I get nervous trying to socialise and parent at the same time. And as for Couple Time, I think my other half might need a few tranquilisers before putting him in a room with 6 american women. Nothing against you all! He's just still recovering from the last visit to the states and "family" time!

That settles it!

Honey, pack up the Nintendo, we're moving to Wiltshire.   8)

Signed,

Lonesome in London

(Not really lonesome, I guess, but sure sounds like fun is a-brewin' elsewhere....I'm allowed to be a little envious, right?!)

Nice to meet all you newbies!  Good to see you settling in quickly.  This is a great place to meet some really cool, fun people.

Webgoddess...you hang in there.  The first year or so is tough, but it does get easier!

;D

Such warm welcomes from everyone I think I'll stay.  ;)
Hmmm have always been told Brit men really go for American women guess this site proves it.

I was talking to my fiance Andrew and told him all of you had made my day with your cheery messages. He's really glad I found this forum as he was worried I'd pack myself in a suitcase(yes with airholes)  ::) and send myself back to the US.

Nice to be able to post and find sympathetic ppl and ppl who are supportive, understanding and encouraging. Will let everyone know when we set a date for the wedding and will post a website so anyone who wants to can take a look.  ;D

Many thanks again to sleepy, hopster, lisaE,myfredricka, wishstar, and nefandous
*huggs* to you all

Well, Wiltshire is way cool, what more can I say? (Of course, the bribing hasn't hurt.)

Hopster always has really great ideas about girls night out. She's always doing some really fun stuff and getting all sorts of whispered 'thank you's and special sweat being flung...truly the stuff of stories that make you want her life. I'm afraid I lack imagination when it comes to what's available in the outside world. So, Hopster's planning this one!

Oh, and Melissa, I meant to ask if you're like me and sit with fan heaters and blankets. Not from Phoenix, but Florida. I get cold!!

LOL...I sure do LisaE I wear my gloves around the house(very hard to type hence typos)  ;). Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it.  :D

I wear my clothes in layers and am always dragging down the comforter when I get real cold or to watch movies. If my hands or feet are cold....I'm cold. Not to mention when I go outside and have 3 layers plus a coat and my gloves.

Looking forward to anything Hopster cooks up.  8)
Guess Wilsthire is the place to be.  ::)

P.S. When I mentioned a girls night out with all of you I think I detected ever briefly a look of alarm in Andrew's eyes. LOL Now why would that be?  *giggles*

Uh oh, the pressures on me now. Hmmmm. Well let me have a think. I've had a rough day and am now drowning my agitation in a box of See's. Did you have these in Phoenix, Melissa?  I'm sure they were all over the southwest.  I have a precious box that i've been saving since December for emergency occasions.  But I could be persuaded to save some for the right type of folk.........

The men will react that way. I can't say it's without good reason. The secret is to not tell them about the male strippers, or at least not right away. And don't make the comment "Oh My Gawd, I had SO much FUN without you!" Just calmly assure them they didn't miss too much, and that a nice time out with some friends who actually know the words to the Oscar Meyer Weiner song was exactly what you needed to get out of the doldrums (but don't admit we actually sang it).

I am also hoping that Hopster saves me a bite of See's before she begs me to pick her up a replacement box at LAX the end of this month.
