US: 12 killed and 31 wounded in shootings at Fort Hood, Texas

My wonderful young cousin who has 5 young children is stationed on this base, so imagine how I felt turning on the telly and seeing Obama talking about these shootings. Thankfully, I called my mom and the family has spoken to him and he is fine. But 12 others have lost their lives. There are no words for how sad and shocking it is for soldiers to kill their own countrymen. 

That's dreadful. Have they established why they did it?

This is what I picked up so far:

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison says the Army
major accused of the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, was about to
deploy overseas.
      Hutchison says she was told about the upcoming deployment by
generals based at Fort Hood. But it was unclear if he was headed to
Iraq or Afghanistan and exactly when he was scheduled to leave.
      Military officials in Washington say the suspected shooter Maj.
Nidal Malik Hasan was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical
Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in
July.
      The soldier is accused of opening fire on the base on Thursday
in a shooting that left 11 other people dead and 31 wounded.
Authorities killed the gunman and apprehended two other soldiers.

Apparently another victim has died of their wounds, bringing the death count to thirteen.

Insanity.

As if there isn't a great enough chance of the soldiers dying while overseas, they have to die on their own base before they are deployed. 

I use to live down the road in Austin and because of work got to know the Kileen area and had friends based in Fort Hood, knew people in copperas cove texas and would pass Waco on my way to Dallas several times a month.  Went to bed last night and it was 7 people dead, I wake up to 13 dead.  It's sad all around for the dead, their families, the shooter and his family.

Just the night before I was ranting like a mad woman on another site after the 5 British soldiers were killed in Afghanistan, now this.  This time though I have feeling where this guy was comming from.

Sad for the shooter?  He guns down 13 people and wounds more.  I'm not sad for him.  I hope they hang him high after the trial.

If he didn't want to ship out to Iraq, all he had to do was refuse to go as a conscientious objector.  Yes, he would probably been in deep poop, but there are people who have refused to go and have won.  I wonder what he was hoping to accomplish by this senseless act of violence.

I doubt he was trying to achieve anything, seems like he just lost his senses entirely.  On  the news this morning his brother said he did not even like to do target practice so I wonder why he was in the military to start with.

He was a psychiatrist, so I assume he wasn't front line but there to support the front line troops. I guess some of the things he heard were too much for him.

But if there were 2 other shooters, then it seems likely it was premeditated, and not just a momentary lack of reason due to mental illness.

Probably because it paid for his Medical school.

Exactly, and if he was a major, unless he commissioned higher because he was already a doctor then he was there for a while. 

He could have claimed CO status.  It is really difficult though.

It was on the news this morning and in the paper. but now it looks like those reports were incorrect.
