Switzerland: Swiss voters vote to ban minarets

Quote
The Swiss and European establishment united today in deploring yesterday's decision by Swiss voters to outlaw the construction of minarets but conservative leaders warned that the referendum showed genuine fear over Islam on the continent.

Swiss officials, media and business leaders voiced shame over a vote that they say will stigmatise the country's 400,000 Muslims and stain Switzerland's name in the Muslim world. In contrast, hard right leaders in France, Austria, Italy and the Netherlands hailed what they depicted as a triumph for the people against the elite.

I find this sad.

It will probably be overturned in court.

Well, this is a country that didn't even grant women the right to vote since 1971 and hid millions of monies stolen from European Jews for the Nazis, their stance is sadly not surprising. :(

The Swiss are the finest people in Europe.  God bless them.

Unfortunately, I'm not shocked by this, but I think it's shameful.

Because they are a proud, nationalistic people who won't be controlled by anyone or be tricked into loathing their national identity by the multiculturalist establishment.  The Swiss skyline is beautiful the way it is and it doesn't need minarets.  The Swiss have the courage that no one else in Europe has.  And for that they have my sincere congratulations.

Would you say the same thing if a church wanted to build a steeple?

Switzerland is a Christian country.  The Swiss don't go building Churches across the street from the Kabah do they?

Maybe not but they had Zwingli going around destroying Catholicism.

So are you basically saying that the Muslims who live in Switzerland should get out?

Never said that.  No one is saying they can't practice their religion.  I just don't see how flooding Switzerland's sky line with minarets is going to allow them to practice their religion.

Yes, there is no outright message that muslims in Switzerland can't practice their religion, but it definitely sends a message of resentment, fear, and unwelcome.

There are only FOUR minarets in Switzerland.
