American rockers Rage Against The Machine (RATM) have stolen the coveted number one spot from X-Factor winner Joe McElderry in what will go down as The Internet vs Simon Cowell.

it all began when Jon Morter started a Facebook group, which has now grown to over 950,000 members. As with many Internet campaigns, the idea was power to the people and for individuals to exercise their own vote in favour of a different number one than the typical X-Factor finalist, which has dominated the Christmas number one spot for the last four years. Morter captured the imagination and hearts of thousands of people on The Internet who didn't want to see Simon Cowell's latest creation hit number one.

I did my small part by buying the single and a live version, and I'm really glad to see the RATM song beating out the X-Factor song.  Without getting all ranty about how the X-Factor promotes the homogenization of the music industry, I just think you don't discover unique talent by public vote.

RATM promised to hold a free concert in the UK if they were number 1, so I'm really looking forward to that, as I never got to see them the first time around.

Makes me wish I had bought the single now. I'll have to tell DH about the concert.

The very best part is that Rage is giving all the proceeds to Shelter! That's much better than having it go toward buying another Bentley for Simon Cowell.

Both of us DJ for a hobby/jorb (I online, he at a pub), and both are more into the rock genre than anything.  This whole campaign has put a HUGE smile on our faces, and we're totally chuffed that RATM won.

I was with a few friends listening to the end of the chart show to find out the result, and we all let out an almighty whoop of joy at the result. It felt even better than when Lordi won Eurovision!

I think next year we should all try to get Muse "Uprising" on the number 1. I think it's much more appropriate.

I was hysterically happy when I heard that it worked!! 

Still being new-ish here (only my third Christmas in the country), it's just gotten through my head... Top of the Pops... #1 single... Rage Against the Machine back-to-back with the Queen.  I'm going to have a gigglegasm here, I think.
