UK Equivalent to Disinfectant Spray Like Lysol
« on: January 10, 2010, 09:23:51 PM »
Does such a thing exist in the UK? If so, what is it called and where can I find it?

All I have ever seen here are air freshener sprays.

Dettol

I've only ever seen Dettol as a liquid. I want something I can spray into the air.

The sprays do exist, albeit a bit hard to find at times.   :-\\\\

Here's a list of Dettol products:  http://www.dettol.co.uk/sf_kitchen.shtml

You may find the Dettol spray in a multitude of places in your grocery store ie) air fresheners, cleaning products and laundry products.  Unfortunately it's an item where you're at the mercy of grocery store layout planners as to where to find it.

I wa just in my local Somerfield today and saw dettol in two different colours of sprays.  Also DH just came back from Sainsbury's yesterday with some Dettol bathroom spray.  I haven't used it before.  But am looking forward to seeing it do it's job :)

Don't mean to come across as obtuse, but I always wondered why people wanted to poison themselves with Lysol...it's so harsh.  Dettol works well, but I wouldn't make a habit of spraying it in the air.

Just to be clear, this is the stuff I was talking about:

Most supermarkets seem to have it.

I'm near a Sainsbury's so I'll have a look if I can get to it considering the ice on the ground.

Although I'm certain I have never noticed the spray before, just the liquid.

Don't mean to come across as obtuse, but I always wondered why people wanted to poison themselves with Lysol...it's so harsh.  Dettol works well, but I wouldn't make a habit of spraying it in the air.

I don't make a habit of it.

DH has had swine flu for 3 weeks and has been spending most of the day on the couch watching TV. The TV room is starting to smell putrid.

Lysol is a brand name of disinfectant household cleaners distributed by Reckitt Benckiser. The active ingredient in many of the Lysol products is benzalkonium chloride. This ingredient is highly toxic to fish, very highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates, moderately toxic to birds and slightly toxic ("safe") to mammals.

I edited the above paragraph from the Wikipedia article about Lysol, which contains some very, er, intriguing information about the product and its former uses.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysol

Some other Lysol products contain cresols and phenols, and so do some products marketed under the "Dettol" brand in the UK. This is another Reckitt brand. Phenol is a poison.

Quote
Before you start swilling molecules of Dettol around the house like many other chemicals, be aware that over-use may lead to contact dermatitis or even bacterial resistance. There is an increased awareness of the problems associated with drug resistant strains of bacteria particularly in hospitals.

Using Lysol/Dettol (same thing, different names in the US and UK) one time to disinfect a disease infested room  is hardly overuse or "swilling it around the house".

Trust me, I am asthmatic and sensitive to chemicals. I know what I'm doing.

If that's what you need it for, that spray is definitely what you need.  You can use it on surfaces as well if you need to. Occasional use is not going to hurt anybody.
