What do you call the spouse of your brother- or sister-in-law
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:00:05 PM »
My husband has a brother. I call him my brother-in-law.

He is married. I just call his wife "my brother-in-law's wife".

I have a sister who is married.

I call her husband my brother-in-law.

I recently realised that my husband has been calling him his brother-in-law.

So is my husband's brother's wife really my sister-in-law?

I'm just curious because I didn't know the words brother- or sister- in-law could be used in that way.

I call my brother-in-law's wife, my sister-in-law. My mother always called my aunt (dad's brother's wife) her SIL.

I agree with pkmac.

Your brother in law's wife is your sister in law.

I call my husband's brother's partner if 7 years my sister-in-law even though they're not married!  That's how I've always understood it to work.

As my husband's brother's wife is too snooty-snotty to want to know any of the rest of us, and the main time I talk about her is with my husband, I call her either by her name, or refer to her as 'your sister-in-law'. ;)

When my husband's brother was married, I called his wife my sister-in-law.  My husband calls my sister's husband his brother-in-law.  My parents also did the same with their spouses' siblings' spouses (is that right?).

I think I've called them SILs and BILs.  Never thought of it any other way til now.

A bit off-topic, but sweetpeach do you know off-hand the Yiddish name for the relationship between your Mother and your husband's Mother (or your Father and your husband's Father)?  I think Yiddish is the only language with a name for that.

I just did a quick google search, but haven't found that Yiddish word I was asking about yet, but I did stumble across a few things that mentioned the two types SIL and BIL had different names in other languages, Italian being one of them.

In most Indian languages, there are specific titles for your sister's husband and your sister's husband's brother (and other permutations of that sort of relationship), as well as the relationship between your mother and your mother-in-law.  They go a bit crazy with all the familiar terms.

I have three brothers-in-law who are my DH's brothers, and they are all married, and I call their wives my sisters-in-law.

Depends who I am talking to - to some people I will refer to my wife's brother in law so they know the relationship to me, rather than thinking I'm talking about my sister's husband.
Although I usually say my American brother-in-law!
