Heylpp!  I am trying to arrange car insurance....
« on: February 27, 2003, 08:09:54 PM »
I do hope that someone can help me.

I am a Londoner and a lucky chap.  I am booked to speak at the Porsche meeting in Las Vegas in about ten weeks' time (see newcomer link: http://www.tbhl.org [nonactive] ) and a dealer has offered to loan me a Boxster to drive there from Sacramento 600 miles away.  Nice trip and nice dealer (Niello Porsche).

Trouble is no UK insurer will insure me on a loan car, just on a proper rental car, and the dealer is not a rental business and a "sham" rental would be unwise anyway.  The UK insurers won't insure me in normal circumstances on any other US car, because UK insurance only applies to UK registered cars would you believe.

No US insurer so far will insure me on the car, because I am not a US resident and this is scary for them as the car is a high performance car and will be a short term policy anyway.

Travel insurance companies will only insure me on rental cars.  This is not a rental car.

I am of course willing to pay a premium and I have a pretty good no claims bonus. (I am presuming that in the US, time spent in jail on motoring offences count towards no claims bonus in the normal way  ;) )

Can anyone help with the name and number of a really clever US or UK insurance broker who can help?  I'd be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Howard

I'd guess that you need a Lloyd's (of London) broker, though in all honesty I'm not sure how you'd get in touch with one.

You could try some of the businesses listed here.  Some of them are Lloyd's brokers and/or insurers that deal in special bespoke policies.

Another way around the problem would be to get the dealer of the vehicle to make you an employee, or otherwise have you added to his dealer policy.

Hi! (I currently live about 10 minutes from that dealership!)
I would think that the dealership has coverage on the vehicle because they still own it and they are not selling it to you. Did you ask them?

The dealership can't help...

Much to their annoyance their dealership insurance only covers US citizens.  They *want* to lend me the car for their own purposes - publicity.   I can't become an employee of theirs because I have no Green Card or working visa.

Today I am trying a specialist US insurer that someone emailed me.  (Thanks)
