Hey! I'm from Hitchin!

This weekend in Redbourn there is a County Show with crafts and a farmers market, but if you don't have a car (like me) its a pain to get to.

July 4th weekend there is a WW2 celebration in Letchworth, with an American celebration day on the 4th.

In Hitchin there is a large music festival July 24-25 called Rhythms of the World. It is fun & cheap: http://www.rotw.org.uk/

Throughout the year there is a comedy club in hitchin, 2nd Friday of every month:http://www.lastminutecomedy.com/
there is also one in Stevenage at the gordon craig theater, which is also good for local performances.

There are also car boot sales, one in Hitchin town center on sundays (though I think they are taking it away) and one outside of Stevenage on a farm (but i forget the exact name).

Probably the best part is that its only £12 return to get to London on the weekends (or off peak) and £9 -ish to get to Cambridge where there is a ton of stuff to do!

I guess there is more to, but it depends what you are into!
