Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I ended up getting A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein. I hope she likes it. Jon had no idea who he was so I'm hoping it's not well known here and she doesn't have it already (because a lot of the recommended she already had! Hard to buy for a bookaholic)
I love love love love that book!

I asked this topic a bit back and Jennie was a WHIZ~

I will say my 8 year old LOVES captain underpants and is the first book she reads on her own without it being bedtime.

Hee! I used to read a "chapter" of Captain Underpants out-loud on Back to School Night.  It was fun to get the parents giggling along. The kids love them.

Yay for giving her a book of poems Ashley!  :)  So many children own no poetry beyond nursery rhymes and wouldn't think to ask for it.  Shel Silverstein is great.  Kids (and adults) love his stuff!

The book came today and as it turns out, we've bought her a first edition!! I'm thinking of keeping it for myself!

It's funny but I still remember Shel Silverstein poems that I memorized as a child.  Best gift ever!

My favorite is 'It's Hot!'. The thought of him taking off his skin and sitting in his bones and still being hot cracked me up every time.

Oh I loved that one too!

And Backwards Bill!

Backwards Bill, Backward Bill
He lives way up on backwards hill
Which is really a hole in the sandy ground
But that's a hill turned upside down

I can go on.  ;)
