My friends have 3 degus in their flat, the cage takes up quite a bit of space.  They haven't really had any problems except that they did mention they will have to repaint the wall directly behind the cage because the degus do toss things out of the cage.

What about a bird, like a parakeet? I can't remember what they call them in the UK. My brother had one when he was in high school.  They live longer than hamsters but not as long as chinchillas.

Reptiles also make good pets. We had a red-tail boa who was lovely and the other snakes and lizards I've known have all been fascinating and interactive, if not precisely "cuddly".  Turtles are also brilliant. We had a run-away box turtle for a few days before my mother managed to track down its owner.

Guinea pigs!  I used to raise, breed, and show them growing up.  Best pets ever!! Wish my landlord would let me get piggies!  (Well wish I didn't need to rent at all, and then I could have all the pets I wanted but that's a different kettle of fish  ;))

You would want a pair of them and you'd want to make sure they have a large cage as well.

I would be curious about the degus though -I always find them really adorable in the pet shop.

I have guinea pigs, and they definitely need to be kept in a pair or more.  But, they need a lot of space, check here:  http://www.guineapigcages.com/

Rats are very sociable.

I am now the proud mommy of two little degu boys!  (now I have three men in my life!)

I brought them home this afternoon, and I can already tell two distinct personalities.

One of them is quite shy and stays away from new people.  The other one is extremely friendly (and afraid of nothing and no one) and crawled in my hand when I went to pick him up - first time he met me.  And he started trying to groom me!

They are amazing so far, and I love them to bits!  :D
