At the time we could have met the requirements if I transferred some of my savings to DH account, but not on DH income here. (sadly he gets paid beans and like so many others has huge student loan debt)

We wouldn't qualify now unless we sell assets in the US and move money. We just bought our house here with almost 40% down, but apparently that money counts for nothing. We still have a smallish saving here, but not the 16,000 + maintenance needed. Somehow I don't foresee many people struggling to meet the financial requirements having that money saved up.

I don't know what the equivalent amount would have been 40 years ago -- but I would guess that no, we wouldn't have been able to afford it then.  It was ridiculously easy back in those days compared to all the hoops people have to jump through now.  >:(
