How to pay a tax owed
« on: October 17, 2004, 04:23:41 PM »
Hi,

I have 3 questions please.

1) I have received a notice from the IRS that I owe a tax for the year 2001 (a casino win that I foolishly forgot about and did not add to my 1040 in 2001). I owe $120. Just wondering, what's the best way to go about paying this? I don't have an account in the USA anymore and those sites where you can pay by credit or debit card only go back to 2002. Can I just go to the IRS office at the embassy and pay in sterling, or is there some way of getting a traveler's cheque or something made out in $US that I can mail over to the US?

2) I am about to DCF in London for the I130 for my husband. I need to file taxes for 2003. What Internal Revenue form do I need to prove my income here in the UK? Is it the P60? What forms do I need to use to file with the IRS? Would it be the 1040 again with something else?

3) If I need printouts of proof of returns for 2001 and 2002 from the IRS, will the office at the embassy do those for me?

TIA for any advice.

JNA

Hello,

Taking into consderation all your questions....
I recently completed all my back taxes going back to 2002. I had to do this for my partner's Immigrant Visa back to the states.... I was horribly confused by the entire process and had no idea what forms to file when and to whom.

I basically ventured onto the HR block website and began filling in the questionnaire to prepare my taxes and ended up having a special tax professional assigned to my case.   They completed ALL of the forms for me including the 1040 form,  1116 foreign tax credit form, and form 2555 foreign income exclusion.  They also filled in forms that act as substitutes for W2's.

The only preparation needed is you have to give them the amount of income earned for that year in US dollars ( use currency conversion rate for the year in question ), amount of tax paid in US$ and GB£, and the head office's addresses of everywhere you were employed for that year.

Since I am freelance, I worked a number of different places so my return was quite detailed and the process cost me $200 per return.

It makes the entire process so easy and takes the stress off your shoulders.

I would seriously recommend HR Block to ALL USA citizens living in the UK AND earning money here, since we have to file every year no matter how much we make!

If anyone wants to be recommended to the lady who finished my taxes, just let me know and I'll put you into contact.
