I am a wannabe knitter!  My town has a fantastic knitting shop but they don't offer classes.  I start maternity leave this Wednesday and would love to try to pick it up while I'm off.  How did you guys learn?  Did you have someone who showed you or did you take a class?
Have you looked on Meetup.com?  There are gatherings of knitters posted there.

There don't seem to be as many wool shops around as there used to be, which is sad.  We have a very good one in Yorkshire http://baaramewe.co.uk/ which offers yarn, needles, books etc. online and they do offer classes.  You can find cheaper yarn in places like Wilko or even some charity shops.
