Indefinite Leave to Remain
« on: April 24, 2014, 05:45:50 PM »
Hi Everyone-
I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before but I can't seem to find it.

After you apply for indefinite leave to remain, how long is the visa good for....forever or 10 years, etc.? I am applying for mine in July.

Thanks.  :)

It's valid indefinitely; however, if you leave the UK for more than 2 years, you aren't considered resident anymore and the visa will no longer be valid.  If you wanted to return to the UK, you would need to begin the visa process from the beginning, and requalify for ILR by whatever rules are in place at the time.

Indefinite = forever.

Indefinate while you remain.
Indefinate Leave to Remain

As Aquila said, if you don't.

Absolutely true about the remaining.  I am a case in point.  Would have been nice if they had somehow explained at the time that the operative word is not "indefinite".

Thanks everyone for the definition. After paying £1,093.00 for my upcoming visa, I'm glad it's forever because I can't afford to pay this amount of money (or higher) again in a couple of years, LOL.

Thanks again.  :D

Yeah, it's nice to be at the end of the process :).

The only other thing to pay out for would be UK citizenship if you wish to apply for it - it's about £900 at the moment, but once you have it you won't need to worry about your ILR becoming invalid if you left the UK in the future.... you could come and go as you please forever.

If you decide not to apply for citizenship, then your ILR BRP card will need to be renewed every 10 years (to update your photo/biometrics), and also, if any of your details change, they will need to be updated on the BRP too.
