Not rinsing dishes?!?!
« on: February 24, 2015, 08:15:54 PM »
Has anyone else come across this phenomenon that is utterly disgusting?  I've broken my fiancé of the habit but 2 of our 3 other housemates don't rinse the dishes and leave them covered in suds to dry. As a result everything they wash still has a greasy film over all of it or it's just not even clean at all.

Of course these are the 2 housemates who also keep their potatoes in the fridge, so they are clearly lacking some general food/kitchen knowledge already.

I did too, minus the ninja stealth, until he caught on.  ;D

Welcome to the UK!

Yup. Only, in my case it was welcoming him to the US. When we went back, he was so used to rinsing them he got on his parents for not rinsing theirs.  ;D

Glad it's not just me that's had this experience and reaction. Haha. Seems like such an obviously unsanitary thing to do; I wonder why it's the norm here.

DH has a habit of washing up in cold water (he grew up in the dark ages) or else he'll boil the kettle for hot water  :-X

Oh yes. My housemates use far colder water than I deem acceptable. Haha. My fiancé does occasionally too. For me, dishes aren't clean unless they are washed in water so hot that I can barely stand to touch it.

Most people in the UK do not rinse after they have washed the dish in hot soapy water. To rinse with water would be a waste of water and is unnecessary. The washing up liquid is not toxic. As for potato's being kept in the fridge, as long as they are kept in a cool dark place they will be fine.

It's terribly disgusting. Just because dishwashing soap isn't toxic doesn't mean you shouldn't rinse dishes. Plus most people are washing the dishes in a sink full of dirty water!

It's not really the ingesting dish soap I'm worried about. It's the fact that they are washing dishes in already dirty tepid water and then not rinsing them that grosses me out.  It leaves food and grease on there that rinsing would get rid of.

Also fridges tend to be rather moist which is not so good for potatoes, unless you're intentionally trying to get them to sprout. I'm less concerned about their health by keeping them there and more concerned that we have five people sharing one fridge and they are taking up a lot of precious space with a giant bag of potatoes that doesn't belong in there in the first place.

Just a few of the many annoyances of living with a lot of other people.

Guess most of my fellow brits must be disusting along with me.. I never rinse after hand washing dishes and I have managed to make it to retirement without making myself or my family members ill from failing to rinse.. each to there own.

Of course you can survive without rinsing but who wants to ingest soap when you don't need to?

GAHHH! I was just talking about this with a friend! I noticed when putting away my dishes that there was a soapy film on them - and soon realized the problem. This appears to be a common issue in the UK where they don't rinse them properly. Yucky. The hubby has been broken of the habit, thank goodness!

When I first moved to the UK in 1993, I couldn't believe people didn't rinse dishes. Plus, there were times when DH used a glass, but just rinsed ....not washed....and I had to snatch it back.

He thought I was being foolish when I insisted on a dishwasher. Now he wouldn't be without one.

I remember one neighbor saying she had a better dish washing liquid that was low suds, and that meant she didn't need to rinse the dishes. I said...nothing....what can you cay to that?

I had another friend who couldn't understand why she had to wash dishes before use when they came to their holiday house in Portugal. She said "I wash everything, but there was mold all over them". And she was maniacal about cleaning. Had the dishes been rinsed properly and dried before going in the cupboards.....I suspect no mold would have developed.

If I'm serving soup (or whatever) I don't want to see pools of residual soap on the surface, and I definitely don't want to eat residual anything.

You know - being the dishwasher - I'd probably be happy someone else washed up at all...

But yes, mine squeak when I put them away.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC
