Any meal at my in-laws is dished out in advance, (and if it's an occasion where puddings are warranted, these are too. Not every meal gets a pudding). from the kitchen and then brought to the dining room table. Sometimes, the veggies are dished family style, but this is very rare. My MIL is quite a good cook, but she has a limited repertoire, so I can usually predict what we may have for a meal when we go over. Luckily, his family loves veggies, so I know whenever I eat over there, it will be healthy.
In my family growing up, everything was family style. I personally don't like family style, because that means there is way more washing up to do. I think everyone should serve themselves from the pan directly
So this means, day to day, J and I dish up from the stove and bring it with us to the table, or shock-horror in front of the TV
.
I will say that when we have guests, 98% of the time, we will serve it family style. The in-laws coped okay with family style when I hosted Christmas.
