Help with Welsh (?) name
« on: June 17, 2016, 09:28:30 PM »
Hi everyone. :)

I met a woman today and I couldn't quite work out her name, even when I asked her to repeat it. Someone else in the room commented that the woman's name is Welsh. It sounded like Braw-lin or Browlin or Bowlyn - any ideas?  I get so embarrassed when I am introduced to someone and can't figure out or pronounce his or her name - and I will be seeing this woman again, so I need to get it right, as she's quite sweet and funny and I'd like to talk to her. :)

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

And there's Blodwyn/Blodwen, and Branwen/Brangwen.

I'd just be honest about my cloth ears and ask her to write it down and give you the phonetic pronunciation, she must be used to it :)

Suggest going to Starbucks and listen carefully when they ask for her name.  ;)

If you get a text from her (even if you know it's her) ask who it is. Then you'll have it written down and can figure out the pronunciation.

Bring up how your name or someone else's name is constantly mispronounced. Hopefully she'll chime in with her own mispronouciations and you can figure out what her name is (or at least what it's not!).

Note: I haven't actually tried any of these tactics but if you did let us know how it goes!

I usually just go with 'sorry, I didn't catch your name last time' and start to blush. [smiley=blush.gif]

I have a name that people can't remember or they mispronounce all the time. People simply ask me, "I don't recall your name" or "How do you say your name?". I'm never offended and I appreciate that someone wants to talk to me, full stop.

Thank you all for your suggestions!  I had no idea there are so many Welsh names that are similar. I guess the easiest is just to come clean and ask her to spell it. My name is a common word, so it always amazes me when people misspell it.

Awdum :D
