When are school holidays?

I realize they can be slightly different from county to county. Hubby wants to plan a long weekend (somewhere in Yorkshire and in the Lichfield area) and we'd prefer to go when it wasn't too busy.

The summer holidays are generally from about the last week in July to the first week of September.

Realised the OP was asking about places in England so it's applicable, but school holidays are different in other parts of the country. Scotland is already on school hols, for example.   
I know many people who actually will drive to Manchester or Newcastle from the north of Scotland at this time of year when English schools are still in session so that they can get cheaper package holidays.  Worth folks in England considering that in reverse in August
