Top 10 movies....
« on: July 21, 2016, 07:22:24 PM »
Jeez....this is getting harder than I thought......my wife is giving me the evil eye on some of these....I'm kinda of starting an argument here......you better be prepared to defend your opinion!!!

My requirements are
1. It can't be depressing. I do not want to leave a movie feeling worse than I started.
2. I can watch it many times over the years.

In no particular order.....yet.....and damn, I could only cut it to 14(I'm sure I've missed some that I haven't thought of)......but I can make the cut to 10.......but it would be hard...(Come on....keep it less than 20).....

-The mummy with Breden Frazier
-Indian Jones 1+3
-Star Wars (the original of course)
-The Librarian
-Willy Wonka with G Wilder
-The Goonies
-Galaxy Quest
-The Matrix
-X men....first one
-Princess Bride
-Wizard of Oz
-Pirates of the Caribbean
-Aladin (animated)

Jeez....the ones I crossed off ......Eddie and the Cruisers 2(it's crap....I love it), Love Actually, my wife would probably put on Bridgete Jones, Treasure Planet, Titan AE, hmmmm, it never ends......Calamity Jane, 7 brides for 7 brothers.........

some great ones there! The first Indiana Jones, in my opinion, is as good as cinema gets.

A bit of a list:

Casablanca
Raiders of the Lost Ark
To Catch a Thief
Bicycle Thieves
Dr. Strangelove
Young Frankenstein
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Lost in Translation
Princess Bride
The Godfather 1&2
Toy Story
2001
Once Upon a Time in the West

Once again, I am surprised that we agree on so much but have wildly differing ideas about some things.  I never watched Indiana Jones as a kid, so I got it for family movie night.  I built it up for the kids and we all sat down excitedly to watch.

Nobody liked it.  The kids were bored and complaining so we sent them to bed saying we would finish watching it later.  We never bothered, and that's saying something.

I've always been a fan of movies that aren't necessarily good......but are entertaining. I usually just will not watch a movie that I know will have a sad ending.....I'm still trying to get myself to watch the Game of Thrones series.....we made it through most of the first season. Usually the movies that win Academy awards don't get my interest. I sold all my DVD's when we moved back to the UK.....I had at least 300. Things like the old Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers tv series. My wife and I both thought the FireFly sci-fi series was great.....but they only made one season. I had one movie that was really bad/good called Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death......well.....mostly it was bad.

We never bothered, and that's saying something.

The best opening sequence of any movie!! A giant ball rolling down at Indy! Supernatural Nazis! A pit of cobras!! And those were real snakes!

Anything with Kurt Russel...

The Thing
Big Trouble in Little China
Escape from New York

Oh and another, I think, almost perfect movie....Predator. It's got my favourite line ever, "If it bleeds, we can kill it!"

This has been an issue for me too.  My sister is a big Academy Awards fan and would always want to see all the nominees before the awards show (not so much anymore).  After sitting through some really depressing movies - just because they were considered good - I absolutely refused to watch anymore.  I think I put my foot down when The Killing Fields was one of the nominees (wow! does that ever date me!), and I can't tell you how many times I've heard how I have to watch such and such a movie because it's soooo goooooood.  I want to be entertained, and I don't want to be depressed after sitting through something I paid for and spent a few hours to see.   >:(

The year Shakespeare In Love won the academy awards for best picture was a great year - finally, a movie I liked!!!   :D

My list of top movies would include -
Shakespeare In Love (of course  :) )
The Princess Bride
Sleepless in Seattle
Can I include the Pride and Prejudice mini series with Colin Firth?  Loved that one!
Emma
Clueless (so clever!)
Sense and Sensibility
Practical Magic
Groundhog Day
Beauty and the Beast (yes, the Disney version)

These are movies I've watched over and over again. I know there are others, but my memory is abysmal and that's what's coming to mind right now.  Can you tell I'm a hopeless romantic?  ;)
Here 2 years as of Oct. 1, 2016.

I'm supposed to be working, so this is way more appealing  ;)

Here's my top 10 and a bit of a mix of things...

Vacation
Dazed and Confused
Almost Famous
The Fugitive
Requiem for a Dream
The Littlest Horse Thieves (ahh, childhood favourite)
Cool Hand Luke
Ghostbusters
Brokeback Mountain
The Right Stuff

I could add Oceans 11 and Snatch into that mix and take out Requiem for a Dream and the Littlest Horse Thieves, depending on my mood.
