Cell phone..sim vs new phone..etc.
« on: August 21, 2016, 01:02:01 AM »
So our son is going to college in Scotland... we need some advice on what cell carrier and if its just better to get him a new phone or can we just go with a sim card?

He has a pretty new iphone but we will need to do a cost benefit analysis on advice given here.

Thanks for any advice.

You can compare sim only plans here: https://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/compare/sim_only_deals/ and here: http://www.moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/brands/sim-only/, and probably a few other places!

I brought my unlocked iPhone 4s to the UK from Malaysia, it was purchased in the US. I've also used other unlocked US phones such as a Nexus 5, and an iPhone 6 in the UK. As long as the phone is unlocked and takes a sim I think your son should be ok.

Fruitgum-

This is a huge help. Thanks for the links. I really appreciate it.

If anyone knows the best carrier around St. Andrews it would be a big help.

Oh St As!!!! Well, back in 2008 it was O2... but that may be a bit out of date! This site might help: http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/search

I really loved my four years there... I hope your son has a great time too! I lived in Andrew Meliville Hall my first year, and it was a terrific community being out of town. I moved into town for the next three years, but my best friends were always the ones from my first year!

As a student, it would have been a real luxury to be on a contract. IPhone is smart... facetime and all that will be a great way to keep in touch! I remember when skype came in and it was rubbish!

I've been using my unlocked American Android for two years here, and the only problem I had was when I cracked my screen - the British version of the phone is slightly different so I had to shop around to find someone who could fix it. We're on Three right now and love it, its international calling is great.

I think you can check for coverage on each carrier's website. I used Giffgaff which piggybacks off O2 and generally had good coverage. My husband's work phone had Vodaphone coverage and was spectacularly awful! However I've never visited St Andrews so can't comment on which provider would be best in that area. EE has adverts claiming to have the best coverage and fastest data downloads in the UK.
