The City of London
« on: October 20, 2016, 04:00:26 PM »

I'm also fascinated by the City of London, which is it's own autonomous region that has it's own Police Force.   All around my work there are these wierd old buildings that were Guildhalls for all the major industries 500 years ago.  I have no idea what goes on in there now, probably tax evasion.  Here's one of my favourites, the Guild of Armourers and Braziers.  It's jam packed with random suits of armour.

Good lord yes. Lately I have been sort of fixated on Roman/Post Roman Britain. In fact part of the old Roman Londinium Wall still stands:

Parts of that wall run right through the Tower of London.  Crazy how long it has survived!

The building I mentioned is on London Wall Street and there are bits of the wall all around.  I was going to get a picture from my office window, but the best I could do was this ruin

Next door is a police station where I was surprised to find a bunch of horses live.  There's a truck parked outside, constantly ready to take the horses out if needed to kick the crap out of anyone asking them to pay taxes...

That green wall is Roman? Is that Latin written on it?

You are such a bitter man!

Look at how far down that building is, you can't dig down that far and not find something old.

What I find very interesting is that after the Romans, Britain sank back to -  I think - roughly the copper age.

If you were a Saxon tribesman stumbling into post-Roman London...what would you have thought? To see those arches? And mosaics and such? It would be like us finding out that the Aztecs had teleportation or something.

And while not in the City of London, the Crossness Pumping Station....

That's a sewage treatment plant!

That's been on my list of places to see for years.  I'm a huge fan of steam water pumps.  The only problem is the location, it's almost impossible to get to from my house .

Near me is the Kempton Park Steam Museum, with a fully restored massive steam engine.  It's the same one that they used on the titanic.  It will be in steam on the 19 and 20 of November.  It's not as beautiful as cross mess, but it's bigger.

They really knew how to treat sewage.
