Jobs i applied for
« on: November 03, 2016, 06:29:14 AM »
Okay ladies and Gents,  after sending my resume to a couple of Colleges and before going away , i got some news stating i was over qualified for one and, and the civil servant one won't be hiring till next October, not waiting for that... I know i need UK experience but i am determined to do something here and putting my experience to work came back last night and up at 6:00 am this morning  to find something.

Should i go agency or not?

also when i input my HNS number on some of the online CV"S it tells me its the wrong number..

What do you mean by HNS number? If you mean your IHS number, that stands for Immigration Health Surcharge and has nothing to do with working in the UK, it's just used for immigration purposes to determine if you have paid for your healthcare or not.

What you need for job applications/starting work is a National Insurance number (NIN), which you need to apply for after you have arrived in the UK.

The NIN is used to calculate how much income tax and National Insurance contributions should be taken out of your paycheque each month and while you can start working without one, you won't be taxed at the correct rate until you have it, and also most employers will ask for it in the application.

I would get started on applying for it as soon as you can as it can take up to a few weeks to receive it. Some people are required to attend an interview with the Job Centre to get one but as you arrived on a spousal visa, I don't think you'll need an interview.

See here for how to apply:
https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number

And more info on the NIN:

I'd suggest that you keep contacting companies directly as well as using websites like http://www.jobserve.com/

Okay can someone explain the grades here for work or and education, trying to wrap my head around this. and the methods they use here, i have 16 yrs experience in IT from level I, II, III   forget level one,  don't do that anymore it seems i am overqualified, i had one company ask me to come back to school ...right  lol .. i prefer Indeed and some others which were posted here,  my job is to have a broad view of what and where to work, Keep asking my wife where are all these towns cities..and having no car (wife needs it) it's a bit hard, not  complaining its just the method on how they go about with experience, also i refuse to give information on color, race religion, and age, this does not have any substance on a job..or does it..Thought experience counts for something... looking hard still.

I've always gone through a recruiter.

I do not answer the questions about religion, race, sex, age, etc.  Seems so wrong after so long in the US!

It's important to know what places are feasible for you to commmute to.  Don't trust recruitment consultants to tell you how long it will take to get somewhere.

When I first moved here, I had a recruitment consultant pick me up in his car at 10 am in Brighton and drive like a maniac to get to Egham in less than an hour.  I took the job thinking it would be a one hour commute.  When I tried it at rush hour, it was closer to two or more!  Who wants to drive 3 hours a day?  I quit!

Working for me is Other than Retford,  where i reside

Lincoln, Doncaster, Sheffield, York Worksop,  its a broad view and the commute is not too bad by train.

Hi,

What subset of 'IT' do you have your experience in? as I'm sure you are aware, there's many different areas that encompass 'IT'.

If you have a more common skillset then you'll of course find it harder to compete for a job as there'll be X% of other similar experience and qualified candidates around. If you have a more specialised skillset, then it's a mixture between finding suitable jobs in the area you wish to work/live/commute and competing against fewer candidates.

Many recent arrivals to the UK from the USA or Canada do often say we have narrow roads here and that's fairly accurate. It does depend on which roads you use most often, but I did have a 2003 F150 for 8 years and 98% of the time it was fine to blat around in!

My background is Financial IT & Infrastructure and got laid off as the financial mess of 2008 began to take hold. I've not stayed within the industry and have reinvented myself and moved into niche product UK based manufacturing in the Automotive and Electronics industry. I would consider going back into industry and it'd be for specific types of jobs I'd look for - but it's not on the horizon for me for the short or mid term future.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!
