Isn't the Life In the U.K. test for Indefinite Leave To Remain visas or citizenship? I didn't think it was for fiancé or spouse visas.

That's correct - it's required for both ILR and UK citizenship (you just take it once, before ILR, and then produce the pass certificate again for citizenship).

It can only be taken in the UK, and you need proof of UK address... so it's not possible to take it for a fiance or spousal visa anyway.

However, it can be taken at any time after you arrive in the UK, and the result never expires (unless you lose the pass certificate, in which case you have to take it again), so you don't have to wait until just before ILR if you don't want to.

Actually they know keep the record electronically.  Try to keep hold of the certificate, but if you lose it, you don't have to retake it.   :D

I had a go at some Life in the UK test questions...I failed the majority of them! How is anyone supposed to know these questions without a degree in British history?

Basically, the only way to pass is to memorise the answers in the study guide - I doubt anyone could pass it without doing that... since the answers are specific to the wording in the guide.

It's Life in the UK....not Life from 500 years ago . If you fail can you retake?

You can retake as many times as you need, but it'll cost £50 (or whatever it costs now) each time. Plus, you usually need to book in advance so you wouldn't be likely to be able to sit the test again the next day if you didn't pass. It was a few week's wait when I took it, but that was 2013, so I've got no idea what it's like now. Regardless, better to take it sooner rather than later to have one less immigration boulder lifted off your shoulders.

Would you recommend a tutor for this or is it not necessary?

No need for a tutor for the Life in the UK test. Just get the official book(s), take online practice tests and study, study, study!  [smiley=smart.gif]
