What can I do with my Roth IRA and other USD investments
« on: February 18, 2017, 05:20:58 PM »
I talked to eTrade and they said I would have to close my account once i no longer have a us residence, vanguard said the same. I don't want this money just parked at a bank account, do I have other options once I lose my us address?

I'm surprised that Vanguard said you would have to close your account once you reside in the U.K. My wife and I reside in the U.K. and both own Vanguard accounts, including IRAs, Roths and brokerage accounts. They have our U.K. address and our daughter's address as our US correspondence address. We also have a US bank account who also have the same info on addresses. When we move money out of our Vanguard accounts it is to our US bank then Transferwise to our U.K. bank.

This was my exact same plan, my long time bank has no problem with me keeping an account so that i can transfer money between the two regions, but vanguard said no. Maybe I should call again to understand if this is a new policy or not.

I only changed my address at Vanguard to my U.K. address a couple of weeks ago so maybe there is something else in play. We are both dual US/UK citizens and we both have a US address for correspondence. We also have a US phone number - a Skype number that forwards to my U.K. phone if I don't pick up on Skype within 15 seconds.

I just found this article, maybe I'll give them a call on Tuesday, it must be that you have to start finding specialist brokers who will work with expats.

So after a lot more digging it looks like many firms are shutting international services, however Charles Schwab is accepting expats with open arms. http://international.schwab.com/public/international/us_investing/us_expat_essentials

I can move my roth ira over there, my stocks, and they provide a USD atm card linked to the account which is cool because my current bank said that they will no longer issue me an atm card once I change my address. The only restrictions they are telling me is that you can't invest in mutual funds as an overseas resident, ETFs only.

Do bear in mind that either US domestic mutual funds or ETFs would be lousy choices from a UK tax perspective.

Guya, I'm trying to learn about this topic. Could you elaborate or link to more information? Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that the ETFs you invest in for a Roth don't matter from the UK tax perspective. And for other investments, you'll be OK as long as the ETFs chosen are HMRC reporting, i.e.several  of Vanguard's ETFs.
