DBS Check for Teaching
« on: April 06, 2017, 03:52:31 PM »
Hello everyone, I am currently trying to pass my DBS check so that I can become a supply teacher.  However, the company has informed me that I need proof from the US that I have been cleared of criminal convictions.  They only way that I have read is through fingerprinting and submitting to the FBI for clearance, but it could take up to 12 weeks or more?!?!

Is there anything else that anyone is aware of that could help me get cleared sooner?  I was thinking maybe a State clearance through the State Patrol?

Any help would be amazing. Thank you!

When I went through UK government security clearance I had to provide a police certificate from the US state I lived in as an international student, to show I had no criminal record in the US... could you not get one of those from the city/state you used to live in?

No, they didn't have me show any kind of proof in that way. So, I don't have a police certificate or anything like that...

I meant, can you get a police certificate from your previous state instead of an FBI check?

It was pretty straightforward when I did it - just downloaded a form, filled it out, sent some ID documents and mailed it to the city police dept where I lived (along with the fee) - I received the police certificate a couple of weeks later.

I could look into that, but did they mail yours to you while you were still in your state?  I imagine that I will have to have it mailed to my sister's then have her mail it to me here...Since I'm so far away.

No, I'm British - I wasn't living in the US when I applied.

I only lived in the US on student visas from August 2003-June 2004 and again from Jan-Aug 2008. I applied for the certificate in July 2009, almost a year after I left the US, and they sent it to my UK address.

I've had some US court documents sent to me here (divorce papers) and they were all too happy to take payment over the phone for international shipping.  And that was a long time ago.  Could be worth calling and asking.  We do have many teachers on this board, so I'm sure someone will be by soon with what they were able to provide.

I appreciate your insight! I hope some teachers do come through here, I am feeling pretty unsure and a little overwhelmed by the whole process.

I had a certificate from my local sherriff's office saying I had no criminal record, or something like that. I got it in 2008 while I was visiting my parents.... so sorry not of much help!

I was able to contact the pol De department in the US city I was living in and they provided a letter stating I had no convictions or criminal record. It wasn't necessary for me to get my DBS check back though. How long have you been in the U.K.? I believe I had to wait until after I was here for 3 months to apply for my DBS.

I am a social worker and had to get an FBI check back in 2012 when I started in this field in the UK, but my employer was able to let me start my job with just a DBS completed whilst the FBI check was pending.

The necessity for the FBI check is because the FBI are able to complete checks with all police systems for the whole of the USA, not just a specific town or state.

I'm afraid if that is what they are telling you is necessary, then you probably need to get your fingerprints done and send it off to the FBI as soon as possible. I had to hire an ex-copper to do my fingerprints and he had the official FBI cardstock paper; he was not cheap. Hopefully there are easier and cheaper ways to get this accomplished now! Good luck!
