Tax advice for US citizen with UK spouse.
« on: April 13, 2017, 03:36:04 PM »
Hello to all,

My wife is a US citizen who is a UK resident.  We got married last April.  She is about to file her taxes and we are wondering if she needs to file for me (UK citizen) even though we both live in the UK?

It's all very confusing.  We are both in full-time employment in the UK.

Any advice would be welcomed.

No, you need not be included on her US return. She may file MFS (married filing separate).

Your wife will be familiar with the mantra of all Americans - it's wiser and more profitable to file MFJ (married filing jointly). For those in your situation, there may be short term (1 year - 2016) pain, but the long term gain (2017 onwards) is well worth it.

EDIT:
The assumption for above is - you were not a US resident for tax purposes prior to your marriage in April 2016.

The deadline for your wife to file her US income tax return for 2016 is 15 June 2017. The deadline for your wife to file her FBAR for 2016 is 16 October 2017.
