filling out customs forms
« on: April 17, 2017, 05:18:35 PM »
Hey guys! 10 days from moving day  ;D and just had a question about filling out my customs forms.

Most of my stuff is already in London, but my parents have given us some amazing kitchen stuff(stainless steal pots and pans some knives ect) will also be bringing back some American snacks, my clothes normal toiletries and some other small household things(books, towels)

normally just list stuff that is going to be left in london for gifts. but since I'm moving do I list everything? they wont charge vat as its personal items? I will only have my two bags and carry on.

Thanks!!

I flew my kitchenaid mixer over in my checked luggage with no troubles (except for a nice calling card from TSA).  I simply declared it as personal goods and through it went.

I would just list it all as personal effects.  I can't imagine anyone will care.

Technically schmechnically they could try to say that if the items are new you owe VAT but I've not heard of that actually happening to anyone.  And Lord knows my suitcase when I come back from the USA is stuffed to the brim with new stuff each time!

I listed them generally, dishes, silverware, non perishable foods etc. When they arrived in the UK, customs contacted me and wanted details. What exactly was in each box and how much. Thankfully I kept a detailed list so I knew what exactly was in each box when unpacking

I'm guessing they got in touch with you because you mentioned "silverware" and were checking to see if you were bringing in items actually made of silver.
Here, knives/forks/spoons are referred to as cutlery.  :)

Nope, they didn't even question that box. The questioned the non perishable boxes, the clothes box (couldn't give then exact numbers. Who knows how many shirts they own) and the box of photo albums and frames

Was this shipped items versus checked luggage?  As Frazieme is putting the items in her checked luggage, I doubt she'll face much (if any) scrutiny.

Yeah, definitely more of an intense customs clearance for shipped items.  And they are VERY weird about food!

How does one fill out the ToR question about U.K. residence, if you're staying with friends to begin and will look for permanent residence on arriving? Thanks.

We were told to write a letter stating our intentions (living in a hotel until we found housing) and did so. Our TOR approval came through in about 3 weeks. Hope that helps!
