Glasgow airport arrivals
« on: May 11, 2017, 12:38:55 PM »
Hi everyone. Does anyone have any memory or experience with Glasgow airport arrivals? Just arriving with all our huge bags and 3 kids is giving me nightmares. Are there any porters that can help or just self-service carts? (Have to get thru customs etc). My last few trips have been in at Manchester and I cannot recall seeing any people with large empty carts for help.'

I came into Glasgow just over a month ago and I only found self-service carts. We took a bus from there, and they were very helpful with the bags (and we had 4 large bags) and two carry on bags.

I arrived Glasgow on my first trip in 2014 and all I recall were self serve carts. Picked it up at baggage claim with my 2 bags and pushed it on to the car rental desk and out to the car. Don't recall seeing any porters.

We came through two weeks ago, but were using a wheelchair service which the airport provided. Plenty of large, free carts, but did not see any porters. Cab for two plus six bags cost just under 30 pounds into the city and the cabbie was really good about loading up the bags. The taxi rank is just outside the doors, before you get to the express bus into town. Advantage of the taxi was that it took us directly to our hotel, the express bus would take you into the main bus station.

You pick up your luggage after you go through customs if that helps. Then just use the luggage trolley to go the last little bit to the exit.

As someone who just flew into Glasgow a month ago - yes, only self-service trolleys (but at least you don't have to pay for them!)

So unless you transferred in London, you'll get off the plane, go through passport control, pick up your bags, and walk through a long hallway (ostensibly customs "nothing to declare" although I have never ever seen a customs officer).

There won't be any porters or anything, but hopefully you can balance it all on a trolley or two!

On the show Nothing to Declare they x ray the bags after they come off the plane but before they're sent out to the baggage claim.  The officers go out when they've seen something in the x ray that should have been declared and see who picks it up and whether they go to declare it or not.  Not sure if that's how every airport does it but it makes sense to me that they don't bother stopping everyone.  Anyway maybe that's why you don't see any customs officers--because no one on your flight is trying to come in with two thousand cigarettes.

Ahhhh!  That explains it. It was a bit like the twilight zone when we were wheeling our six big suitcases through the customs area and there was nobody in sight!

Thanks everyone! So once I get my bags on the cart, is there one fairly quick straight shot out? I have a very unhelpful 9-year-old ("I can't, mommy!") and a very OVERhelpful 3-year-old ("I DO IT!!")...and a 6 year old (who gives me the least trouble of all tbh)--if I can get one of the older two to push a cart I'll be all right, as long as it's not a lot of curly queues with a lot of rope obstacles etc. my husband will be on the other side of the wall...

Manchester had a bit of meandering if I remember properly but I could be wrong. I was so tired by then.

I know one way or the other I'll get thru. Just need to mentally prepare for flying with these kids on my own with all our stuff! [smiley=juggle.gif]

Three kids in your own?!?!  I shall say a prayer for you!

Honestly, I'd resort to bribery if necessary.  The 9 year needs to help!!

Yes, just remind yourself that the journey WILL end.  You might want to kill someone, but it will end.  At least you aren't pregnant (so I assume) so drink as much as you need to on the plane!

I would give them a call and explain that you will be traveling alone with three small children and lots of luggage, I'm sure they will be able to provide someone to help you. Hopefully you won't have to resort to child labor!  ;)
