International License
« on: May 11, 2017, 02:38:51 PM »
Hi! Has anyone from US gotten an international license in the interim between getting UK license?

I will be back in the states soon and could sort it without a problem. Just wondered if there were any stipulations with it if i'm on a spouse visa and in the country for this long?

Would it be fine if i got my UK license before it expired?

Thanks!

Honestly, I don't think there is any advantage or reason to have an international license.

An international driving licence basically just translates your licence into other languages. It's required for visitors by some countries, but I've never heard of anyone getting one for the UK (and needing it).

Regardless of if you have the IDL, you can only drive on your US licence for one year. After that, you'd need a provisional licence and be treated as a learner driver (only driving with an experienced driver accompanying you, no motorway, etc) until you have your UK licence.

You can get your UK licence whenever you want - you don't have to wait for your US one to expire
