Yeah, I really envy those who have supportive family. I'm in an isolated area due to a few reasons, so I don't even have friends locally. One of the reasons I was willing to uproot and go to another country after marriage.

Pretty much the only thing my family can offer me is space in their basement! And as a disabled person whose joints dislocate I'll also be responsible for moving it all there & unloading it.  ::) ::) So ... if I can afford to ship it at once I definitely will. It just depends on so many things right now! (And US healthcare expenses being a major factor so I cannot wait to be in England and not have to think twice about going to the ER when it's needed.)

I still haven't heard anything negative about upakweship so I'm wondering what bad experiences were had. If you did and don't want to publish it here, please pm me. :)

Space in family's basement would be an enormous help to me right now. Or anyone's basement, for that matter.

Nan D. posted her account with upakweship, but from what I gather it was a case of miscommunication. You have to read their FAQ and slide shows really, really carefully for details. Ask lots of questions. And, of course, the bigger container you use, the more difficult it will be. Their tiny pallets are much less hassle than the 20 foot containers.

The only thing I have to add is that if something is really important to you, bring it.  Stuff you leave behind in a friend's basement tends to disappear.  When you live all the way across the ocean, you just can't keep track of stuff in the US.

Yeah, learned that the hard way. Left something precious with a friend once, with the plan to pick it up a few months later. The friend and I fell out, and it took five years to get it back--and in terrible shape.

Btw, after you submit your ToR, you don't get any sort of automated email confirmation of receipt.

The only thing you can do is call customs to ask about it: 0300 058 8454

FYI, the actual moving day was an incredible nightmare.

Our assigned person refused to answer questions, and I had to ask to be given someone else.

The company Upak contracted to pick up my pallet nearly broke my shipment (as in almost shoving it over and/or dropping it from the lift several times, and then once PURPOSELY trying to shove it over by hand). Not at all convinced that it won't arrive in pieces at the US terminal, let alone UK.

Got lies and more lies from the contracted company and/or Upak (although the pickup company employees were extremely rude as well, incompetent, and had completely unsafe and inappropriate equipment).

I knew the other disadvantages of Upak when signing on (the limitations they state), but I did not know they contracted pickup to companies that should never be allowed to stay in business. Reflects badly on Upak, and I still wonder if incompetence or lying was on their end as well.

How are you able to get a power converter that works? Since UK is different voltage AND hertz? If you've checked it out and found a converter that will do hertz and voltage, PLEASE let me know. It's going to cost a fortune to get a new rice cooker (I have a VERY good one, and as far as I can tell the UK doesn't do good rice cookers).

A little late to this party but I brought my KitchenAid Mixer over from the US and we got a converter for it to work over here.  It works just fine.

Wow, that's pretty good! Is your office out on the outskirts somewhere?
