Whoppers Vs Malteasers: The Definitive Statement
« on: May 15, 2017, 10:13:35 AM »

Recently, someone on this forum complained that Malteasers didn't taste right compared to Whoppers.  I always thought they were the same, so I took a pack of Malteasers with me to the states and did some research.

A rare meeting of two great candies:

Here's a side by side comparison, the only problem is that the packet of Malteasers had been in the bottom of my backpack for a week in 100 degree heat.  That's why they look like they've got leprosy.

You can plainly see that Whoppers are much darker in colour and seem to have more smooth glaze.

Results from the taste test were conclusive:  Whoppers had a much stronger, maltier taste and the chocolate was higher quality.  Malteasers had a single strong sugary taste with little complexity.

Whoppers for the win!

That's because malteasers are covered in real chocolate and whoppers in some vile, indestructible chocolate like substance!  ;D

I forgot to point out that in the comparison, there is only one Whopper on the left.

Just for a point of clarity, it may just be the perspective - but it looks like the American balls are bigger. Can you confirm?
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Anecdotal evidence would suggest.

'Twas me and I stand by my assertion.  Thanks for doing a taste test, you know, for science.

That's because malteasers are covered in real chocolate and whoppers in some vile, indestructible chocolate like substance!  ;D

I can't comment about the chocolate because I can only stand the taste if it's overwhelmed by another flavor, hence my appreciation of Whoppers and Reese's.

We did another test with the whole family last night, and this time we used a fresh pack of Malteasers for better science.

Here's a good shot for ball size comparison:

And a shot of the interiors.  I was surprised to find Whoppers are way more dense where it counts:

Finally, here are the ingredients:

Sorry Beatlemania, I doubted you but you have been proven right.  Malteasers and Whoppers are massively different.

They are starting to sell Malteasers in the US now too. I saw them when I was there in January in Phoenix in a QT.

That's surprising, what's the point of selling Malteasers when they are so close to Whoppers?  And what's a QT?

I saw Malteasers at the Dollar Store in my Houston suburb only yesterday. I don't care for either but if I had to choose, I would buy the $1 Malteasers.

If I remember correctly, QT is short for "Quick Time" stores that's a convenience store like a 7-11.

You used to be able to get Maltesers at World Market, as well.

Yeah, but they were imported. You can get tons of UK foods at World Market. Before I moved over, I took a pic of the "British Aisles" (hahaha) for my DH and he was like, well you don't even need to move here now!
