E-filing while living in the UK
« on: May 25, 2017, 10:01:37 PM »
We are both dual US/UK citizens and moved to England last May. I recently completed my US Federal and Louisiana State tax returns using TurboTax. The return was reasonably lengthy with qualified and non qualified dividends, capital gains, an annuity cashed in, Roth conversions, a qualified US pension, a non-qualified US pension, a UK pension, and 2 Foreign Tax credit forms (1116).

The Louisiana return was very simple as usual with only the W2 from a Louisiana company to report and claim back tax on, and when I completed it a few weeks ago TT said that overseas residents could not efile so I mailed a return, and even though I gave my US bank details they mailed out a refund check.

However, when it came to the Federal return I was able to efile and the return was accepted a day later  :)

Thanks for sharing Durhamlad. What company did you use to eFile?  I've had problems in the past with companies either not recognising a foreign address, or not including Form 2555, and have (clearly) put filing taxes off to the last minute yet again. ::)

There is no last minute here; you can file extensions to 15 December 2017.

I used TurboTax, and using a foreign address was not an issue.

TurboTax said I was ineligible to e-file because my AGI is 0 ???

Managed to e-file through OnLine Taxes. Hopefully it gets there on time. And more importantly -- I hope I did them right! 2016 was a busy/complicated year: gained UK citizenship, was made redundant, got divorced, moved to spain for a few months...hmmm

I was all set to use another tax program this year.....but something changed and TurboTax allowed me to do it......no idea why. I just hope it let's me next year.
