Usually, the hot dogs were just kind of swimming in it, keeping warm/simmering until someone ordered one and then the person serving you would take out a dog, chuck into toasted bun and spoon the sauce all over it. Very messy, but tasty.

I swear I had nightmares about this last night.  Hot Dogs floating in brown sauce with sugar?  Are you trolling me?  I've been up north before and never saw anything like this.

I always thought that sauce was called chilli and contained ground beef.  Are we talking about the same thing?  I've never heard of anyone soaking the dogs in chilli though.

BBQ sauce. Made as close to recipe as above.  No meat. No chilli.  ;D

Watch the video I posted in the link above when you get a moment.  It's definitely a Central New England if not all of New England kind of thing.

Not sure if it's an all of New England thing as we didn't really have this on the North Shore. Closest we had was chili dogs really or hot dogs and beans (but then it wasn't really on a bun but I guess you could do it that way). Spent a lot of the time in the summers down the cape and don't recall coming across it there either but I don't think I ever thought about looking to have BBQ sauce on my hot dog in fairness (it wasn't until I moved here that I would think about doing that for some reason hahah)

Yeah, I'm thinking it's one of those central Mass quirky food things.  Definitely found it in lots of places growing up and like I said above, we had in school cafeterias for lunch.

Haha it's funny to see how different central MA and Western MA is/was to the North and South Shore and the Cape lol

It is funny!! For example, Roast Beef isn't a Central/Western Mass thing at all.

Jimbocz, this is what I mean by a Massachusetts Roast Beef Sandwich  ;)

Sorry Phatbeetle, I don't know anything about Roast Beef, other than those look pretty good .  I liked the way they all looked like they were at the bottom of a bag of groceries:

That one is definitely smooshed! Google "New England Roast Beef Sandwich" and go to google images. There are LOADS of more delicious looking ones...my mouth is watering as we speak.

I can't be watching a hot dog documentary at work.  If somebody sees me they will take my pass and march me out.
