Too depressing to blog about the UK and the USA
« on: May 28, 2017, 09:14:38 PM »
I've been doing my expat humour blog: http://expatclaptrap.com/ For two or three years now, looking for funny differences between British and American culture.

But you may have noticed I've been posting less frequently recently. Now I think I'm going to be winding down the blog, as nothing seems that funny any more. I've done the best I could to explain why in one last attempt to find humour in the terrible situation that the UK and the USA have put themselves into:

http://expatclaptrap.com/not-easy-mr-funny-expat-guy-nowadays/

But this might just be my last blog. At least until I can go back to blogging about stupid stuff like spray-cheez and Ribena, instead of trying desperately to find something funny to say about two countries I love shooting themselves in the foot over and over again.

In the meantime, I invite you to check out my other blog, http://dothewrongthing.com/ which has nothing to do with UK-US politics or culture.

Stay strong fellow expats!

True, Boris in a funny hat isn't as funny when he's selling arms to a repressive regime.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

But this might just be my last blog.

Probably for the best.

Aww, I had wondered where you had gone.  You have the one blog I enjoy reading!

But I get it, the future is bleak for both countries right now!

Thanks - I'm still blogging over on my other site - just the topic of Anglo-American humour just isn't so humorous anymore. Not that Trump and May aren't ripe for satire/ridicule.

Could you maybe just shift the tone of the blog from humour to something else? Like if you are feeling like you're wanting to talk about the bleak stuff, maybe keep writing but just change the subject matter? Unless you are just feeling like you aren't even interested in blogging anymore about that topic and that's fair enough.

I've thought about that. I'm not deleting the blog or anything like that. I just feel like I won't be blogging nearly as often. I don't know that I'm particularly well-placed to do a more political blog. Anger/worry doesn't suit my writing style. Plus there's plenty of way better bloggers/writers doing that.

I'll keep thinking about it. In the meantime, I started another blog a while ago: http://dothewrongthing.com/ so I could write about any old silly thing that pops into my head - mostly about how things are often the opposite of how they seem. And how I'm kind of a dumbass. I'm more comfortable talking about that.

I don't think it has to be political or anger based, but it doesn't have to be exact comparisons between US and U.K. that you expect to come off hilarious. You could just blog about expat-related topics that matter to you in general using whatever type of tone feels right for the piece.

Haha the other blog does sound good though and like it will cover the above as well to a degree.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)
