UK passports for US born kids - turnaround time?

We are applying for a "returning UK spouse" visa, and the first step is getting British passports for our two US-born children. What's the average turnaround time? We're applying from the States.

It should be 6 weeks for a first UK passport application made in the US.

I mailed my applications (3 kids) on 4/20 and got the passports on 5/18. This is long(er) because I had to mail a different birth certificate for each kid because I sent certified copies from vital statistics instead of one that was issued within 3 months of their birth, so I'd say if you send the right ones, subtract about 7-10 days off my timeline

Hi morecoffee, when you say "returning UK spouse" visa, do you mean  the returning resident visa or the spouse visa?

The reason I ask is that the returning resident visa is notoriously hard to get, I've only read of a couple of success stories in several years of following UK immigration. So unless you have an exceptionally strong case, I'd forget about rr and go straight for the spouse visa. 

Either way, you'll need the children's passports though.

I don't have specific dates (I didn't write them down) but it was extremely fast and super easy! I only wish the spouse visa application was as easy   We received both of our son's UK passports within only a few weeks.  Literally. Maybe 3. It took longer for our paperwork to get the UK via USPS (14 calendar days) than it took for the passports to be processed and returned.
