Standard Practice For Spouse on Car Insurance
« on: June 09, 2017, 03:36:04 PM »
My husband was wondering if it is standard to have the spouse on the car insurance prior to me having a UK license. I have just recently arrived, so I still have almost a full year before I need to take my UK driving test. We live in Northern Ireland if that makes any difference.

If you are going to be driving the vehicle, you need to be named on the insurance.  If you are not going to drive that car, no need.   :)

Also if you plan to get a UK licence, I would get started on the process as soon as you can - because it can take a few months to actually get the licence.

You'll need to apply for a provisional licence and take and pass the theory and practical driving tests. Plus, a good idea to take some lessons to learn how to pass the test.

If you don't have a full UK licence by the end of the 12 months, you will be treated like a learner driver in the U.K... which means displaying L plates on the car, being accompanied at all times by someone over 21 who has held a full UK licence for at least 3 years, and you will not be allowed to drive on the motorway.
