Moving a HUGE plant across the pond?
« on: June 28, 2017, 02:23:23 PM »
When my dad died, we inherited his beloved potted palm tree he's kept alive since 1970. Nobody else in the family wants it, and there's no way I can let that thing go, even when we move across the pond.

It's pretty large. A grown man can barely lift the pot. Thankfully it's not too tall at this point though because we cut it right down (less than four feet tall from bottom of pot to top of tree.) Is there a plant moving service that's not too extortionate??

You need to see if it can even be imported.

Could you take a cutting from it?

This was my thought. Obviously, if it can't be imported, that's a bigger issue, but I've successfully cloned many plants with cuttings.

When is your move? If you've got some time and do decide to go the cutting route, you could practice taking cuttings now so you know it will work.

If it is able to be imported and you do ship it over, I'd still suggest taking a few cuttings and/or collecting some seeds just in case something happens to it on the way over. You can never have too many backups.
