My experience at the US Embassy
« on: July 07, 2017, 07:29:20 PM »
Registered the new kid on the block today.  My second time around so I thought I knew what to expect.

Last time around I was asked what my high school mascot was and when I moved to the UK.  Then he asked about when I worked in Orlando and I told him I worked for OPD.  Asked if I had worked at Disney and told him I did but I had blacked that out.  Had a laugh.  The end.

Today was like the grand inquisition!  They wanted me to remember dates!!  From like 20 years ago.  I know I got my first passport shortly before a trip to London for a vacation and that I celebrated my birthday here.  I can even tell you that my birthday fell on a Wednesday that year, spent most of the day at Hampton Court Palace, knew where we ate dinner and that we went and saw Tap Dogs!  I have no earthly idea what year it was!!  Every question she wanted to know the date.  I know my wedding anniversary.  That's about it!

I think I didn't remember when I started my degree programs because I was working full time.  I remember GRADUATION dates.  But not when I started!   :P

Also doesn't help that I've not had longer than a 2 hour stretch of sleep for over two months!

So my questions for you:

Do you remember what month/year you started your undergrad and graduate degrees?  Do you remember the month/year you got your first passport?

My kids are 21, 19 and almost 18. I remember the months and day they were born but sometimes it takes a second to come up with the year. I find myself wanting to mix up the youngest twos birthdays. Then add in the UK formats their dates differently, I have a hard time telling anyone my own birthday.

Mind you, I have a really good memory- my husband's called it scary at times! I'm probably abnormal  :P First passport was Feb. 2005 when I was 17. Got it just before a trip to France with my high school French class. Started my UG Aug. 2009 and graduated Aug. 2011- I transferred from community college, so a ton of my credits transferred too. Really the only classes I needed to take were the core ones for my major.

I used to have a good memory and in some way still really do.  But I have lost some of it.  I used to be introduced to someone once and remember their name.  Great skill.  Not so much anymore.....

I remember when I started/finished my degrees because I have to put them on job applications all the time.

I know when I got my first passport, because it was right before I went to France as an exhange student my sophomore year of highschool...which was pretty memorable.

But normally, no, I'm bad with years!

I remember when I started undergrad and both grad degrees; undergrad was in September 1966, so nearly 51 years ago!

I got my first passport over 2 decades later - 1988. Can't remember the month, but I still have the cancelled PP in a file.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Do you remember what month/year you started your undergrad and graduate degrees?  Do you remember the month/year you got your first passport?

I can do the degrees because they were the same year I graduated high school for my undergrad, and the year I got to my first duty station in the Air Force for my graduate degree.

First passport, though? Possibly 1985 or 1986? We took a family vacation to Mexico, but I seem to remember back then you only needed a driver's license to get back into the US. Anyway, no idea.

We've been down to the embassy for child registering twice now, and have screwed something up each time. First time I forgot to bring our marriage license, but after quizzing us about the ceremony they let that slide. Second time my wife forgot to bring any ID, but they were able to bring up our first application and compare signatures that way. Luckily we're not having any more kids, as I can't imagine what we'd forget in the future.

Very impressive!  I'm only going back 15-20 years and can't remember!  Had I known to review the dates before I went, I would have.

I didn't start my bachelors degree straight after high school.  I was in my 20's so can't quite pin point the year.  I know I started during the normal fall admission.

My masters was while I was working in Colorado.  I know I started in January but not sure if the year!

I can't even remember what year I moved to Colorado!  The year!  I know it was May.   ;D

I've just started listening to the Serial podcast, and in it the defendant was felt to be unbelievable because he testified that he couldn't remember what he was doing when the murder took place.

Heck, if I was asked what I did last Thursday, I would have no idea. Worked till something another, then home....I don't know...TV?
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Did we go to the same Embassy ?  Last time I went they didn't give me s hard time about anything.  Never have.

They did give me a paper form to fill out but I just left all the hard stuff blank.  Seemed to pass Okay.

Maybe it's different if you are registering a kid.  I did have adult supervision with me when I did that, maybe she answered all those hard questions.

BTW, Serial is a great podcast.  It's even more interesting later when people who know facts about the case, like if there was a pay phone in a mall 10 years ago, start to call in.
