Why blame it on the Americans?  What do we have to do with it?

I hate that the washing machine is IN the kitchen. It's so weird.

In a room off the kitchen is fine. But I need the kitchen space.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Lol. Just thinking of this makes me think of all the extra space we could have in our kitchen, if our washer/dryer wasn't there  ::) I'm currently in the US. My parents have always had a nice sized utility room, big washer and dryer. Laundry is washed AND dried in about an hour and a half... bliss!

Though I have to admit I do miss putting laundry on the line on a nice, sunny day. My parents haven't had a washing line since the 90s, as they just never used it.

Me too, I want to drink Pimm's with her.

I'd love a utility room because then the kitchen would possibly have room for a dishwasher.  I am kind of ambivalent about location of the washing machine at this point, but I would really really really really like to go back to having a dishwasher.

When I lived in Navy housing in Connecticut our washer and dryer were in the kitchen. It's not like we don't have space issues too... it's just not as common as in the UK.

It's convenient as much as anything.  Of course space matters, but maybe they're just wierded out by the possibility of dropping clean undies on a not-clean kitchen floor.

Dinner and laundry - never the twain shall meet apparently

I stand by the quote in my signature line:
"I've never gotten food on my underpants!" (Which is in direct relation to having to hang clothes up in my kitchen to dry when I lived in a flat!)

Not having a dishwasher is seriously sucky.  I'd consider giving up the washing machine totally.  I do laundry once a week but I'm not washing dishes 3 times a day
