We just got back from 10 days in the US- Chicago, Illinois (where my family is) and San Antonio, TX. We currently live in Edinburgh and play to stay the entire month of Aug to get our fill of our first Fringe Festival. ;D

Hope you enjoy it... for me, personally, that would be hellish!  :o

Just got back to Eugene from a five week trip to Scotland. Mostly stayed in Busby but also had two or three days each in Tighnabruaich, Garelochhead, Beith, Thurso, and Kintore. And three days at Center Parcs near Penrith which I reccommend if you have youngsters.
Part vacation and part scouting trip, we also visited a whole bunch of towns from Perth to Lanark to see if there were places we both think we could live.
Travel is so much cheaper when you can sponge off of friends and family.
It was a whole lot of driving though.

We visited some friends in Germany, and one of them works at the European Space Agency.  We got a small personal tour and I was in space geek heaven.  We didn't get to see much because of security, but I did get to play with this hyperbolic chamber that had been used in space

And we got to see the pool where they train through the window

You can just see a mock up of the ISS as well.

Thanks everyone, it was really neat.  We couldn't go in the centrifuge

because the two astronauts who landed Saturday may have had to go there instead of Huston because of the storm.  For that reason, they were changing all the access and all I could do was take a picture of the sign outside.

I don't want to give any identifiable details about my friend without her permission, but she knows all the astronauts on a first name basis.  We almost got to go to the airport and see the returning astronauts change planes but they decided to make that bit non public.

My son - he's 4 - watches the cartoon Go Jetters. The Eiffel Tower featured prominently in one of the episodes, and once he found out how close it is he wanted to go see it. So in about a month we're going to take a ferry to France, stay in a campsite outside Paris for a few days, and go into the city so he can see the tower.  :)

Success!

Going to Italy in less than 2 weeks now. Will be in Rome for the first 4 days. Definitely want to do Pompeii. Any recommendations on how to best make sure we get there?? Links would be helpful :) I did a google but there are a few different places to "get tickets/tours" and I just don't want to be ripped off so it's nice to hear of first-hand experiences! (please and thank you)

I did Rome, Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii and Vesuvius last year :).

We took the high speed train from Rome to Naples (we stayed in Naples for a few days), and then took the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii and Sorrento. If you want to go to Vesuvius as well, there are bus tours you can take from one of the train stations.

https://www.rometoolkit.com/naples_visit/naples_circumvesuviana_trains.html

Beware of pickpockets though, especially on the Circumvesuviana train, which can get very crowded and is filled with unsuspecting tourists. We were crammed into a train car with an American family last year, and the husband was pickpocketed right in front of us - he could feel it happening! The pickpocketer got off the train at the next stop, then got onto a different carriage further down.
