If there's a decent sized health food store nearby, look for jars of unsweetened apple puree near the baking stuff. It's a bit finer texture than Mott's or Treetop in the US, but not as weird and pasty as the baby food option.

RealFoods in Edinburgh carries 700g jars and they deliver in the UK. Never seen it at Holland & Barrett, unfortunately.

Thanks... and there goes the rest of my money. Lol.

Seriously, I'll stop in next time I'm in town. Looks like they have a lot of great stuff.

Look what I made now that the shortening haters in the family are gone-- McDonald's Sausage and Egg Biscuits

With some biscuits left over

By the way, does anyone know what cream of tartar does?  I didn't have any so I just skipped it.

Yum!  Cream of tartar has a lot of purposes.  Did the recipe have baking powder in it?

Yes, baking powder, baking soda and tartar.

In that case it helps activate the baking powder and create a light fluffy bake.

Makes sense, these weren't the fluffiest biscuits in the world.  They also lack that special greasy softness that McDonalds biscuits have.

Oh my gosh!  Back when I had a kitchen, I made sausage, egg, and cheese "McMuffins"!  I trust, from your picture, that yours were better than McDonald's as well!  The only thing I would change in what I did is I would have made the sausage patties bigger.  I didn't anticipate how much they would shrink as I cooked the fat out of them.

Shortening haters?  I don't understand how someone opposes it.  It's an ingredient... a tool.  That's like being opposed to corn starch.  Oh, wait... my mother is/was.  Nevermind.  Weird people are weird.

But wait, you can get a Mcmuffin from McDonald's here!  It's even got a good sized piece of sausage on it.

I also underestimated the amount of sausage required, I should have bought the square sausage bits instead of emptying my own sausages. (Snigger)

I forgot to say that your Mcmuffins look a lot better than the real thing

Yeah, we can get a McMuffin here.  I don't remember why I decided to make "English muffins", but then we just kept taking it that next step.  We made our own sausage patties from pork mince and spcies, and "poached" the eggs (in these little plastic cups that my husband can't remember what they were for, but they make nice eggs) in the microwave, which made them almost exactly like McDonald's eggs.  The only "fake" thing in my McMuffin is the cheese, but it has to be Kraft singles.

They tasted really good, and were fresh and awesome.  We had them a few times.  But now I have to remember where I put my recipe book, and build a kitchen.  hehehe  And if we'd lived closer to a McDonald's, I don't know if I would have bothered to make them.  Now I definitely would if I had an oven!

I really wanted biscuits and gravy during my last trip home. My daughter brought me home some from Waffle House and they were burnt.

I'd stick to making my own but I'm crap at making biscuits from scratch. One of the only things I can't get the hang of.

I need to watch some YouTube instructionals.
